The Palacios ISD Board of Trustees offered
no insight into what remains the #1 question
on everybody’s mind, “What will happen to
Coach Bowden?”
The planned discussion to resolve differences
has yet to take place and after 5 weeks on
paid administrative leave the board’s motive
continues to be questioned.
For five weeks the Palacios Athletic
Department has made the best of their resources
in effort to run a successful A.D. Program.
Athletic Trainer, Scott Kurtz, expressed his
concerns at last Monday’s PISD Board Meeting.
“I wanted to address you all on what is going
on in the Athletic Department and I wanted to
do this to help out the coaches, Mrs. Adams
and the school district,” stated Kurtz.
“Coaches are being spread thin,” explained
Kurtz.
“With one less person, athletes are not getting
the instruction or the attention they deserve.
Moral is down not only with the coaches but
with the athletes.”
For years the A.D. has acted as a central
place and a central person for coaches to bring
their incoming bills and concerns. Kurtz briefly
acknowledged Palacios Junior High secretary
Veronica Rodriguez who has been a key factor
in maintaining up to date bills.
“As a taxpayer I’m appauled that a person
is being paid for doing nothing,” said Kurtz,
“Coach Bowden could be at a desk right outside
here, at Mrs. Adams office doing the work
Veronica, Mrs. Adams and I are doing without
going to the athletic department.”
Kurtz questioned why Bowden received
a contract extinction last March stating the
committee that was assembled at the board
request recommended hiring him, but he
was doomed
from the start
because he did
not have the full
support of the
board.
Previously
published
statements by an anonymous board member
were then quoted by Kurtz, “I promise what
you have with me is integrity and passion for
the position.” “What you have is someone
that represents you, all of you, not just some
specific clique, color or culture.” “What is best
for the kids is always the controlling factor in
any good board members decision.”
Kurtz concluded his forum with a question
addressed to the board, “My question to you
is, Are the students
being served as well
as you promised,
or do you have
personnel agendas
that have gotten in
the way?”
The statements
were later identified by
Palacios Beacon
as
those of School Board President Rick Cink’s
paid candidate announcement
prior to last May’s school
board election.
During the meeting, Board
member Peter Zamarripa
noted for the record that the
current situation with Bowden
has resulted in lawyer fees in
excess of $10,000.
The agenda for a called
Special Meeting on Tues. (Feb.
17) was posted late last week
with the lone agenda item of
the contract of the Athletic
Director.

interesting, but not without the back story - why is he on admin leave. What did he do?

Why do you assume he did something? It says in the article the problem is personnel issues from board members. He may have "done something", but at this point why is that assumed? I will tell you this. If he "did something" bad, he would not have been reinstated. That's a red flag.

You are correct - I assumed. But it doesn't say there were personnel issues with the board members, albeit there is a slight inference. So, for someone in the know - why is this coach on admin leave for five weeks. Is it due to issues with school board - or something else.

I'm not in the know at all. I was just simply stating that when a district suspends someone, it is common place for everyone to assume something bad was done. When a district suspends an employee with pay for that long of a period, and then reinstates that person, there are some red flags going up. I wouldn't assume he did anything. I really don't know the coach, or anyone associated with the district. The article hints that there are some disgruntled board members with an axe to grind. I hope it all gets straightened out in the end.
