COLUMBUS — An impressive display of team defense led the Brazosport Lady Ships past the Wimberley Lady Texans, 58-45, on Tuesday in the Class 4A Region IV quarterfinal round.

The win at the Columbus gym propels the 28-6 Lady Ships to the Region IV Tournament this weekend in Kingsville.

It is a trip Brazosport has not taken since 1999.

“Yes, yes, yes, yes!” an exuberant Brazosport coach Cheryl Williams said.

The Lady Ships came out on fire with a stifling defense against the Lady Texans early in the game, opening up a 20-6 lead, with six points by Christian Connor and five from Kaytlin Holmes.

Leading scorer Jasmyne Harris picked up two fouls while playing that tough defense and sat down with 4:01 left in the first period, but Brazosport kept the pressure on, creating nine turnovers in the process.

“We did a great job defensively and we came out hard and that is the way we want to play,” Williams added.

But Wimberley got to this point in the playoffs for a reason as it finished out the period on a 10-2 run with buckets from Yancey Gilmore, Alex Duncan (four points) and Taylor Stoever to close within a 22-14 deficit after eight minutes of play.

Williams continued going to her bench time and time again, while the Lady Texans kept a tight rotation of six to eight main players.

Behind a 7-0 run to start the second period, Wimberly closed within a point of the Lady Ships, 22-21, but a 3-point play by Harris built the Brazosport lead back up to 25-21.

Wimberley stayed close thanks to a bad shooting quarter for the Lady Ships (3-for-17 field), but it still was down by four, 29-25, at halftime.

“Credit Wimberley because they came back and have an amazing fight in them,” Williams said of the Lady Texans. “But at halftime, our girls just resolved themselves to winning this game.”

After being down by as many as 14 points in the first half, Wimberley finally caught up with the Lady Ships in the third period off a base-line drive by post Magi Linker, making it 29-29.

The Lady Ships came right back with a fast-break dish from Harris to Sydney Holmes to retake the lead. Holmes came off the bench to score six big points in the third stanza, as the Lady Ships built another 10-point lead, 44-34, with one quarter to go.

In the final period, Wimberley got as close as eight points, but the Lady Ships had more than an answer for everything the Lady Texans tried.

“With them playing seven or eight people, we looked much fresher at the end of the game,” Williams said. “We rotated a lot of people and allowed a lot of legs to get on the floor tonight in hopes of trying to wear the other team down.”

Harris led the Lady Ships with 20 points, and Holmes had 11 as they were the only double-digit scorers. Wimberley was led by Duncan with 15, while Katelyn Clanton had 10.

Brazosport will take on the winner of the Fredricksburg-Hondo in the region semifinal round.

Wimberley finishes the season at 24-12.
