BAY CITY — Brazosport turned up the heat with a smothering defense Tuesday night and pulled away with a convincing, 67-52, victory over El Campo in a Class 4A, Region IV bidistrict showdown.

“It’s always great to get that first playoff win under your belt,” Brazosport coach Ondra Waddy said. “It was a total team effort. The last 10 to 12 games, our bench has really come up big for us and tonight was no exception.”

Brazosport (19-12) now advances to the area round against either Navarro or state-ranked Liberty Hill.

“We don’t really care who we play next,” Waddy said. “We just feel good how we are coming along as a team and are tickled to get to play again.”

Brazosport, which had beaten these same Ricebirds by one point, 60-59, earlier in the year at El Campo, broke open a tight game in the third quarter with an 18-11 run after taking a 24-20 lead at intermission.

The Exporters stretched the lead to 13, 50-37, only to have the pesky Ricebirds bounce back to within nine after three quarters, 42-31.

Things got a little more hairy for the Exporters early in the final quarter when sophomore center Kevin Davis drew his fifth foul with 5:31 left and Brazosport up by a 50-43 count. Davis exited with six points and a team-high 13 rebounds.

From that point, junior Ja’Quavious Dean stepped up big time, closing out with 11 points, including nine in the second half. He also came up with five rebounds and a steal and blocked shot coming off the bench.

Brazosport guards Chris Rossow and Angel Trevino were nothing short of outstanding on both ends of the court. Trevino tortured the Ricebirds (18-12) with a game-high 18 points and six clutch steals to go along with four assists.

“Angel made some big plays for us down the stretch,” Waddy said. “It seemed like every time they got close to us in the second half, either him or Chris (Rossow) were coming up with huge steals.”

Twice in the fourth quarter, Trevino stripped a Ricebird guard and dished out length-of-the-court passes leading to easy layups by the silky smooth Rossow, a sophomore.

Rossow tacked on five steals and had five dishes himself in the victory.

“We came out very aggressive and that got us in a little foul trouble early,” coach Waddy said. “But I wanted our kids to come out and be aggressive, and I think they certainly were to the very end.”

Noah Taylor, the high-jumping 6-foot-3 junior, closed out with eight points, including a monster dunk in the first quarter that lit up the Exporter faithful.

El Campo freshman center Reed Spenrath paced his team with nine points and 11 rebounds, while the squad’s leading scorer on the season, Le’Trent Greely, failed to connect on a basket for the night, finishing with six of 10 free throws.

The Ricebirds got some help off the bench from junior Jabous Davis, who clocked out with nine points, including a perfect 5-5 from the charity stripe.

Nine players scored for the winning Exporters. The squad’s defense also helped force the Ricebirds into 24 turnovers.
