Mr 44 and I are going to see ZZ Top on May 3rd - I am super excited.. Totally unplanned lol.. I got home from work the other day and we were watching the previous night's Jimmy Kimmel and ZZ Top was on the show - promoting their new tour - I did a search and saw they'd be in Corpus on May 3rd - it's a Sunday - even better :) I booked right there :) We saw them in Spring of 1973 at Sun Valley Dance Hall in Victoria.. I was a freshman and he was a senior.. I got grounded for a week when my mother found out.. Mr44 saw them a couple times in Austin at the "World Confab" or whatever it was called back then.

I'm pretty sure this will be an older crowd:smoker: Never been to the Concrete Street venue.. Any south Texas folks have some imput?

I was four years old in 1973 Just Saying!:taunt::DThey played in Abilene at the Coliseum last Tuesday night. Packed house, standing room only--I was on the floor about 10 rows from the stage :p . They put on a very good show--I have seen them 4 times now... 1st time in '81 at the Cotton Bowl, twice in Odessa in the late 90's and early 2000's. They're not as energetic as they once were and the vocals are not quite as good but the guitar and drums are just as good as ever. Definitely recommend anyone who likes them go see them on this tour. These guys are all over 65 now and who knows how much longer they will be playing... funny you mention the older crowd--there were people of all ages there. Lots of grey ponytails and canes and walkers. Still a great show and it was good to see a sold out big name band in Abilene.

Awwww, great band era. Don't make them like this anymore. I seen them before at Cotton Bowl. Not long after Kiss/Styx Tour around 78-79 I think. Have fun 44. Don't inhale.:smoker:

Think I'll have to make the journey to CC myself for this one.

But I do Like ZZ Top. I was a teenager when the video of "Legs" came out. And lets just say it influenced my youth. :D The girls were nice too! Get your mind out of the gutter!:dispntd::tisk::D

Back when MTV showed real music video's 24/7. Live on air VJ's. Last I seen of this network, it had goofy programming. Most, nothing to do with music videos as I recall.

Fun stuff! Here's my only ZZ Top story: My sister went to high school with guitarist Billy Gibbons (Robert E. Lee in Houston). Then, she marries a drama teacher who was also one of only a handful of Ronald McDonald's in the U.S......hey, don't laugh, he made mucho dinero wearing that silly costume!!...Ronald McDonald has rock star status...limo, body guard, etc.......anyways, what does that have to do with ZZ Top?.....Well, during a parade in Denton, my Ronald McDonald brother-in-law was to be one of two honorary chairman, the other was Billy Gibbons!.....So, bro-in-law got to hang out with Billy and stuff...said he was really nice....so I asked him, "Did you get his autograph?" My brother-in-law's response was, "Well hell no, he didn't ask for mine!"...:vrycnfsd:

cool story Cam - one of the ladies I work with has a good friend that lived in the Seattle area in late 60's early 70's and she has a picture of ZZ Top playing at the Prom in Seattle.. awesome.. ...

Now to put another spin on this story on a LONG Friday afternoon at work........ when I was telling our youngest son (26) about going to see ZZ Top - he said - "Oh cool, I'm going to see Puddle of Mudd in San Antonio Friday Night"- I thought he was joking with us - I had NEVER Heard of Puddle of Mudd.. He texted me a while ago and then said "see y'all tomorrow" I asked him what's he doing tonight - big date?? maybe??? "MOM, I told you, Austin and I are going to San Antonio to see Puddle of Mudd in concert" yep, I checked online and sure enough, there is a band called Puddle of Mudd. I've turned into my mother...:vrycnfsd:

Update - I texted Johnny after I saw Puddle of Mudd was REAL - I told him I'd never heard of them, are they "new" and Honest to God, this was his reply "Mom, they're OLD - back when Aaron and Chad were in college - maybe 2004 or so" 2004 is OLD... Lord Help Me :speech:

To be truthful, I also had a mellow/funky short period phase in my life. I recall a Wild Cherry, Teddy Pendergrass and a Lionel Richie (Commodores) 8 track in my collection. Still like me some Teddy and Lionel listening today.

Well will you listen to all the Ol' Timers on here....now where is my Mountain and Night Ranger 8 tracks...

One thing I have noticed while spending my kids inheritance at Casinos is that they always have groups/bands from the 70's there. Security is a must to help them on the stage...and provide oxygen to the ladys near the stage.

Your right. I recall bikini or thong type panty's being tossed at the bands way back. Now you go see ZZ Top, KISS old time type bands, these lady's are tossing granny panty's.:hand:

44, go old school when you attend ZZ Top in CC this May. After the bong passes.

I lived in Giddings for a couple years right after college from '83--85. One day at work I got a call from a friend who owned a body shop and he told me to get over there--immediately. I informed him I couldn't just up and leave work like that and he told me "just get over here now or you'll regret it". so I made up some excuse and ducked out and when I drove up to his shop there was a '33 or 34 Ford coupe street rod sitting in the bay. It had sprung a radiator leak between Austin and Houston and started to overheat. The only person in Giddings the driver knew was my friend who had previously done some custom paint work for him. My buddy introduced me to... Billy Gibbons. Very cool guy, super laid back. Medium length beard at that time with the always present dark sunglasses. We talked for few minutes until my friend had his coupe patched up enough to make it to Houston. After he drove off I realized I had not asked for his autograph. Oh well. Still a great memory...

I miss the "Balinese" in Galveston...:( Dang hurricanes!:foul:

I liked their earlier stuff better. I remember having their demo "ZZ Top", "Rio Grande Mud", and "Fandango". Those were their best, in my opinion, although I do like some of their newer songs.

Awesome story.... 😃.
'83. We LOVE Mountain . Saw Mountain w/Leslie West, AC/DC, MOXY and Boston, early 1978 at Laurie Auditorium in San Antonio... 10 of us went in a Chevy Van.. Sounds like a song. 😜. I was pregnant with son #2 so I was elected designated sober person/driver. Being the only sober person with 9 people that thought everything was funny, was not fun😉

 Parking at Concrete sucks. Are y'all spending the night? If so, maybe you can get a cab to drop you off. The bad thing is cabs are not always readily available in CC. We usually park up on the hill next to the cemetery and come in the back way lol
Hoping to make it to the show too. We'll be in touch.

YEP.....it's a big walk most of the time from your parking to the Concrete. They do book very good bands in there and get some big names. It's really a pretty good concert venue, and has a natural north wind windbreak for this time of the year. Get there early and get a good spot to park your butt, though....because at our age standing on concrete will make for a loooong night. There will be tons of young rowdies there partying it up....so don't be surprised.

We got reserved seats (thank heavens). Row 15 from stage.. Never been there, so I hope that's good seating...I think little44 is going to drive down with us and drop us off at Concrete and he will go hang out with some college friends living in CC. Then pick us up afterwards. That's plan A. lol.

My first concert in San Antonio was Boston. Sammy Hagar opened up for them. I think I was about 12, went with my older sister and older brother, who was a fireman was there for what ever reason they had firemen at concerts (pyrotechnics) so we got in free!! Saw a bunch o concerts between then and now, and ZZ top was a foggy memory at best. Hey - Rush is coming to Austin - if there are any Rush fans out there.
