Watched basketball game last night vs China Spring with two coaches on staff from that 1987 State Championship season.

In 1962 San Antonio Brackenridge won the 4A State Football Championship. That was the largest classification and only one team in each district advanced into the playoffs. Even though Warren McVey was a great player they were not even supposed to win district. They lost some district games but everyone beat everyone else and they were the one that was left standing and barely made the playoffs. They were underdogs in every playoff game but won. When they reached the semis they would have been voted the least favorite to win State but did.

1984 Medina Valley. Beat heavily favored and defending State Champions Daingerfield in State Game.

Possibly the biggest upset in THSF history.

'81 Cameron Yoemen. Not picked to win its District. Unranked after week 10. Were not picked to win any of their playoff games.

Manor (10-0) Had only given up 50 points while scoring 275 in 10 games. 15-14
Barbers Hill (10-1) Had 6 shut outs in the season. 23-8
Newton,(13-0) Had No 1 ranked Running Back in the Texas and in Top 10 in the nation> Anthony Byerly - University of Texas. 28-28 Advanced on First Downs 18-13
Port Isabel(14-0) had given up 25 point all season. 25- 14
Gilmer (12-0-2) supposedly had a harder road to hoe to get to the SC game. Very dominant defense. 26 - 3

Just wanted to point out------ Gilmer was held to 75 yards total offense in the SC game.

I was at that game at UT Memorial Stadium. I sat on the Refugio side cuz I had kinfolks from Refugio. I was astonished how arrogant the Refugio fans were and how they were already planning their state championship party. I must admit that by halftime I was already secretly pulling for Lorena and when they won the game I was ecstatic. In many ways things have not changed in Refugio.

I was on the Lorena side, our whole family held our breath every time Willie Mack Garza carried the ball. Thank god he was a little hampered by an ankle injury. The 2 pt conversion Lorena made was a great catch by the RB. The Lorena / Pilot Point game was a great one too. PP led 11-0 at half but got into a fight in their locker room at halftime , came out and got beat 15-11. PP was probably the best team in 2A that year.

MV was an amazing game... If my memory serves me right Dangerfield never punted the ball the whole game..Don't think MV had a single 1st team all state player..

John Henry is still in Lorena, raising two great kids @ 7 & 8. His boy is quite a flag football player.

Atlanta rabbits in 2003, lost the first four ball games. Moved linebacker to running back and dominated every game after that. Tatum in 96, lost first four games and then went on a tear. Played in state championship but lost.

I hired the QB of that Tatum squad, sucker has 3 FB rings, played for a 4th and has a Track State Title as the Head Track Coach too... Heck of a Coach and person
