Cotton Bowl @ 11:30 on ESPN: Baylor vs Michigan State

It will be the high-powered offense of the Baylor Bears trying to impose their will against the solid and stout defense of the Michigan State Spartans in a New Years Day game in Dallas. This should be a great game to watch, folks. Don't forget that Baylor also has a very good defense and Mich. State also has a very good offense. Maybe these two teams should have been in the playoffs as well. They really needed 8 teams in the playoff system this season, but it's the first season for that so naturally they went with only 4 teams to start it out. I look for a midlevel scoring affair in this one in the 30's for the winner, even though both teams have the capability of putting lots of points on the board. If there are lots of turnovers the scoring will be higher.

Halftime

Baylor's playing good ball on both offense and defense. MS is no slouch of a team....they are very good and can put up a pretty strong defense while scoring on offense. So far they have time of possession but Baylor never really pays much attention to that stat. They just do what they do, and that is quick strikes. Baylor's defense is probably the X-factor in who's gonna win this game. So far, the Baylor D has been up to the task and Baylor has the lead.

Baylor gets the second half kickoff and it's bombs away Baylor as Petty lets a long one go right on the mark downfield for another long quick-strike scoring TD. It's now 31-14 Baylor to get this 3rd quarter underway with fireworks.

Looks like the gameplan for Briles and Baylor is to go for the quick scores, get a good lead, and force Michigan State to pass. They are forcing MS to become one dimensional with the pass, which is not the Spartans strongest suit on offense. They depend on a mix of pass and run to be effective.

Baylor gets a 50 yd field goal from Fresh. kicker to extend the lead to 34-14 now. Baylor's already in the mid-30's here in early in the 3rd. They will get it into the mid-40's for sure, the way things are looking.

Michagan State goes on a 9 play drive to score. Now it's a 13 point game 34-21, a scoring drive MS desparately needed in the 3rd quarter here. Baylor needs to keep the pressure on MS and somehow keep scoring with their possessions. It's apparent that MS is not going to be shut out by the Baylor D the rest of the game. So Baylor will need to keep scoring to keep the lead and hope they don't turn the ball over on a fumble or interception.

Petty hits another long pass from the Baylor 11 all the way downfield to the Spartan 38, then another 10 yds. the next play as Baylor is threatening again in about 5 plays.

Big OG #80 becomes an eligible receiver as Petty dumps one off to him and he "saunters" into the end zone untouched like an elephant on the charge, haha. Really it was a great call. Baylor now up by 20 again 41-21. Still 4 mins. left in the 3rd.

Baylor D gets the pick on the 1 as MS is driving down for another score and returns it back out to the Baylor 21. Dead ball personal foul of 10 yds. after the play. Baylor now starts at the 31. Big turnover here to keep MS from answering right away.

Back to Baylor, they will attempt about a 46 yarder here for another 3 points. It's wide right as it hits the upright. MS dodges another bullet.

Baylor doesn't play sustained drive football too well, so they will just need to keep scoring on their possessions somehow and try to get a defensive stop somewhere along the way here in the 4th.

It's entertaining, to say the least. Now Petty almost throws an interception and the MS defender just misses it with nobody but field in front of him.

3rd and long now for Baylor at the MS 41 but he is tripped up at the line. If he is not tripped up, it will go for another TD. Baylor going for it. Pressure and Petty just throws it away. MS takes over.

Now offsides on Baylor. They need to maintain the field position and just run it, but Petty passes it for 2 yds. to the sideline and the defender pushes him out of bounds to stop the clock. Not good for Baylor.

Sorry Baylor, but you didn't take care of business again this year in a bowl game. Your weakness was your inability to sustain drives and hold possessions. You are a quickstrike offense that usually just outscores most teams, but against a good offensive and defensive club you have trouble.
