Time for the big boys to step up and see who goes on in the NFL Playoffs and who stays home---will it be the re-born Cowboys or the playoff win hungry Lions? Let's dance.....

The Cowboys D-line will hafta to git after Stafford early. I've seen him go off before.....he can be dangerous with that rocket arm of his. I look for a fairly wide-open scoring affair in this one. I don't think the Cowboys D will just shut down the Lions offense.....we'll hafta outscore them. Stafford won't need much of an opening to make completions. Luckily he is a pocket passer and doesn't scramble well.

Don't worry about me. I'll be just fine because we've got this guy (click link). Well that and the fact
that Stafford will be playing indoors and not at Lambeau or another cold weather venue
where he seems to be unable to hit a barn with most of his passes. Maybe Jerry should
considered opening the doors for this one.

Yeah, same could be said for Stafford this year. Of course replacing Nate Burleson with Golden Tate has alot to do with that too.

One of the biggest Cowboy game keys is whether they can get enough of a running game going against that Lion front 4 to make the passing game click and on the other side if the can hold out the Lion pass rush long enough for Romo to setup and make good throws.

waterboy

I think the biggest key to this game is can the Cowboys put continuous pressure on Stafford. If they can't do that it's anybody's ball game. Stafford absolutely has to be pressured relentlessly for the Cowboys to keep him off balance, forcing errant throws and keeping him frustrated.

Green Bay had over 150 yards rushing against them. But I think that might be due to the threat of Rogers through the air. I still say again the key to this game will be whether Romo (and the o-line) can keep the D-line of Detroit honest. I think the Dallas O-line will handle the D-line of Detroit fairly well in the straight up pass rush but it's the odd man blitzing that worries me. Romo needs to read the defense and set them up for failure if they bring pressure from other areas! Much like he did in the first half with Washington with quick passes to Dez and Beasley.

Detroit got absolutely no pressure on a hobbled Rogers and that worries me. They allowed Cobb to run uncovered on basically the same route
the entire game and Ihedigbo's coverage and tackling was so bad that it led to him being benched in the second half. If they allow Beasley to
run wild then Murray and Bryant will damn near be unstoppable as a result. If Detroit will get enough of a rush to lesson the time the secondary
is in coverage then Romo will almost assuredly make a mistake. Whether Detroit can capitalize on that is another story. The offense has a
tendency to stall, especially near the RZ under the new OC and the Lions will lose if they have settle for FGs in this game and don't want to have to
rely on Matt Prater anyway indoors or not.

Why was Steve Buerline the QB for Dallas in this game. Anyone remember?

Found the answer on Beuerlein's wikipedia page.

Dallas Cowboys

At the beginning of his career, Troy Aikman had problems with injuries that prevented him from completing a full 16 game season. In 1990 needing only one more win, the Cowboys failed to qualify for the playoffs, after having to play backup Babe Laufenberg in the last two games against the Philadelphia Eagles and the Atlanta Falcons, both were losses.

Less than a week before the start of the 1991 season, the Raiders traded Beuerlein to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a fourth round draft choice, in order to back up Aikman. According to head coach Jimmy Johnson, the Cowboys had "been actively pursuing Beuerlein for quite some time",[21] including a trade agreement worked out in January that Davis reportedly backed out of.[19] When Aikman's knee was injured in the Week 13 game at the Redskins, Beuerlein came off the bench and threw a 4th-quarter touchdown strike to Michael Irvin,[22] as the Cowboys held on for a 24-21 victory, stunning the 11-0 Redskins in their home stadium and ruining their hopes of a perfect season.[23] He then started the remaining four games of the season, winning all four and leading the Cowboys to an 11-5 record, their best since the 1983 season under Tom Landry. They also made the playoffs for the first time since the 1985 season, capturing the fifth seed as a wild-card team. While Cowboys players like Irvin would praise his leadership and confidence, Beuerlein repeatedly denied there was a quarterback controversy. "I plan on driving this car as hard as I can, until they take the keys out of my hand," he said, "And I know that's gonna happen as soon as Troy gets well, so I understand that."[24]

Even though Aikman's knee had healed sufficiently to start the first playoff game at the Chicago Bears, Johnson decided to continue playing Beuerlein. Johnson claimed his star quarterback's knee was not yet fully healed, but also wanted to stick with the "hot hand" in Beuerlein who had won five straight games,[25] a move that upset Aikman at the time.[26] Beuerlein was efficient and effective against the Bears, throwing for 180 yards, with 1 TD and no INTs in leading the Cowboys to a 17-13 win at Soldier Field. It was Cowboys' first road playoff win over a decade. The following week, he started at Detroit, but was relieved by Aikman after the Lions jumped to an early lead. Aikman was equally ineffective at moving the offense, and the Cowboys lost 38-6, ending their season.

Wow--what win. Happy days. Ur Lions deserved better for their effort, Red. Go Cowboys, but they better play better against Rogers and the Pack.

Great team win. Both the offense and def had periods of iffy play but this team has a ton of resolve.

Romo, Romo, he's our man! If he can't do it................then it's the same thing we've seen for years.

Get your shots in, won't get them in rest of the game :)

We need touchdowns! Romo had receivers open but took rookie like sacks on last possession. We need TDs!

This is too intense for me..... :crying: So I'm gonna talk smack about Romo some more!LOL!!! Romo traded the rookie interceptions for rookie sacks. One small step for Romo and BIG Giant leap for the Cowboys into the second round.

told you not to worry the outcome was foretold lol

Wonder how much play the "no call" PI penalty is going to get.....I'll bet a bunch.

Nah, Joe won't be saying anything about the no call until he recovers from beating his head against the wall in the booth. :D

I take back every bad thing I said about Lawrence. I still hate Troy Aikman in the announce booth. He runs down any Cowboy team except the teams he played on. I actually watched the game with the TV muted in the 2nd half and actually enjoyed it more. Congrats Cowboys!

That was unfortunate if you are a Lions fan. But the Lions held the Cowboy receivers the entire game and the refs only started calling it late. And how about the roughing the kicker on Lions that didn't get called?

I felt like it was justice for all the no calls by the very biased refs. The calls were heavily slanted in Detroit's favor until then.

Sure glad the Cowboys got the no call, but I just hate to see that kind of official uncertainty on a pivotal play in a playoff game.

Best part was seeing Chris Christie stuffing his pockets with leftover vittles up in Jerry's Penthouse, while all the others were high fiving one another, following the gift win.

I agree! I think he intentionally tries too hard to convince people he ISN'T biased towards the Cowboys and it makes him come off as against them.

Don't know if the Lions would have capitalized on the penalty or not....who's to say. All that can be said is the noncall was indeed interference and should have been called. Beyond that who knows what may have happened afterwards. It was a blown call and then there were noncalls that also went the other way IN FAVOR of the Lions. Looks to me like the Cowboys came out on top and advanced.

Let's assume for a second that they had let that pass interference penalty stand and Detriot scores and wins the game. Wouldn't the Cowboys have a much, much bigger bitch today? That was a poor throw by Stafford and probably 99% of the time it cannot be caught and probably should have been intercepted. I don't support giving a first down to a team on a pass interference call unless the pass interference actually prevented the catch. There was no way in hell Pettigrew makes that catch and the contact was so minor it should have been a no-call........ There was actually just as much offensive contact as defensive.
Dallas was penalized 6 times for 46 yards and Detroit was penalized 8 times for 44 yards.

I agree and to add to it you could have got Pettigew for a facemask before the contact which in turn could be the reason he made contact to begin with

That's the way I saw it, too. The calls were terrible in the first half in Detroit's favor, so a non-call on that particular play was poetic justice in my opinion. Dallas played horrible for most of the game, and still won. That's all that matters. The Lions and media can whine all they want, but some of the bad calls in the first half could've been momentum swingers, too.

On the Dallas 2nd possession Dallas seemed to be getting a little bit of momentum. On a 3rd and 5 the refs called Williams on a offensive interference call that took a 1st down away from the Cowboys. Terrance Williams was obviously pushed into the other defender by a Lions defender.... Huge killer for Dallas to go 3 and out for the 2nd straight possession...

The pull on the facemask by pettigrew could actually have been the reason the defender wasn't able to get his head turned around to make the interception.

Besides Detroit didn't have a problem with the NFL picking up Suh's suspension.
Either way it was a good momentum builder to overcome adversity and still get the win. Next week the Cowboys need to come out with more intesity to beat GB at home.

I was thinking that Jerry had forgotten to write the check to the refs' pension fund, but he must've signed it and had it delivered at half time. :)
