Oh great some more bulls with no balls.

Interesting enough the all time series between Graham and Stephenville is 16-16-1 the last time they played was 1997 when they had a 2 year stint in the same district.

I spoke to the Mineral Wells Rams QB about the turf. He looked very surprised when I told him what someone had said. He said the turf is fine. I went to the Iowa Park and Decatur games and I didnt see anyone having difficulty with footing. How much better can this game get. Our District Champion against one of our rivals for many years playing at our house in round 4!!!!!! Welcome guys!!!! Play your hearts out!

This game is very interesting to me. Graham, beat Abilene Wylie twice but lost to Big Spring. It will be interesting to see if there is a defense in Region 1 that can slow down our offense with #1 at the helm. Our "D" really showed up against Big Spring and did well, hope to see them do it again against Graham. Really excited to see this one play out. I say S'ville by at least 2 TD's. Jackets 52- Steers 35.

After the realignment, I told anyone that would listen that Graham will be the team we must beat to get out of the region. Obviously I didn't predict our defensive struggles or Stidham going down. I didn't predict the strength of this years Wylie and Big Spring teams. Yet here we are! I honestly have never seen Graham play. All I can speak is what I do know about the Jackets. We all know the offense is one of the best in the state. This is year in and year out by the way. Stidham made the game look easy yesterday. He shredded the Steer defense. Don't know his running stats but his legs looked fresh. He had another gear. For those who say he won't make that much of a difference on defense, wrong again. The steers had zero deep passes on the Jacket defense. When Stidham went in on defense, there was no effort at all to go deep. Why? Because you have a 6'3, fast, can jump out of the gym, intelligent athlete back there playing center field. Go ahead and throw that jump ball and see what happens. Of course that dynamic makes a difference. There is no doubt Graham has the talent to beat the Jackets, but I like our chances. If the defense plays like it did yesterday, we will be extremely hard to deal with.

I went and watched the graham vs big spring game earlier in the season. I realize that was several months ago but if the same Graham team that struggled vs the big spring defense shows up then this game isn't close. I will assume they have worked some things out on offense though. They also did manage to hold the big spring offense (which appears to have peaked in september/october) in check as well. Should be a great game.

Jacket97
11-29-2014, 10:09 AM
On third down and long situations we made it possible to bring pressure against Big Spring getting some big sacks on 3rd downs. That was a big difference maker in the Big Spring game. The defensive scheme as a whole was great. Kuddos to our great coaching staff. Lets hope to see another performance like this one against Graham.

It so happens that I've been able to see Graham play 3 times this season. Game 1 was vs Brownwood in week 2. Graham won 40-15. Good game where both teams were playing hard nosed football. Brownwood was able to move the ball effectively almost yard for yard with Graham's offense. But turning the ball over 5 times killed any momentum they had. I will say this about Graham's defense, they create turnovers with their "pin our ears back and hope to hell you make it" high pressure style of defense and fly to the football. Without looking at the scoreboard, you'd think that game was close. Both were evenly matched athletes wise but execution and discipline by Graham was the key difference. Game 2 was in week 4 vs Argyle. This game was highly anticipated by Graham and many around the state as being a key measuring stick for both programs. Hype especially from the Graham faithful was buzzing in the air when we arrived. Another game where it looked like either team could win is how this game played out. Argyle looked similar to how Brownwood was able to move the ball except for 2 key factors.. 1) execution and 2) Argyle's x-factor/workhorse/offensive weapon Nick Ralston. As solid as Graham's D-line is, they couldn't stop #22. They slowed him down and didn't allow him a big run. I thought by the 3rd quarter Ralston was surely going to get gassed as much as they were feeding him the Rock and was getting pounded on just about every play.. Nope. He actually just kept getting stronger. Unbelievable talent that kid is. Graham had it's chances to win that game but execution miscues denied the chances they had. Game 3 was vs Abilene Wylie last night. I didn't catch their first meeting but was played out similar to it from what I gather. Similar result and similar amount of turnovers Wylie had (I think 4 in last nights game). Graham plays physical and hard as does Wylie. I was loving this type of game last night for a couple of reasons.. 1) I like physical football and 2) I was loving the fact one of them was going to have to face Stephenville the next week after pounding on each other for 48 minutes. Wylie's offense looked lethargic last night and couldn't get anything going due to their style of play on offense which fell right into the strength of Graham's defense, a ground and pound attack. If Wylie was more consistant with their passing game, they would have been able to move the ball more effectively. Graham and Wylie just really match up well with each other. Tough loss for Wylie again and a sweet victory for Graham.

After watching Graham 3 times, I've been very impressed with their program, team and fans. Very similar to Stephenville. Their town is a little smaller but similar in culture who love their HS football team. Their team plays hard for 48 minutes. Their fans are good sports from what I could see. They show respect to the other team. Heck I sat on the Graham side last night with a Sville hoodie and didn't get kicked out. Haha This game will be a good test for either team to advance to the next round. I know each have a goal and have worked extremely hard all season. It's going to come down to which team executes the best on offense, defense and special teams. Graham and Stephenville match up much differently than Graham and Brownwood, Graham and Argyle, Graham and Wylie. Stephenville will be Graham's defenses toughest challenge so far this season. Only team I can somewhat compare to Stephenville's is Decatur. They runs a similar style of high tempo offense with a dual threat QB but with a few big differences and 3 to be more exact. Stidham, Williams and coaching staff. Defensively, Stephenville will be challenged again with Graham's spread style of play having quick RB's and dual threat QB. Could this game become another track meet? No, I think it will be a close hard hitting game for the first 3 quarters with Stephenville having the edge based on execution offensively. After witnessing the adjustments the Stephenville coaches have made with the defense and seeing their performance yesterday against an explosive Big Spring offense, very impressed. And this supports what I've been sharing the entire season. The Jackets play solid defemse for 90% of the snaps but have been stricken with giving up the big plays. I think they are really starting to pick up some confidence and peaking at the right time and no other are responsible as the coaches and players for not giving up and continuing to improve. This is something opposing teams do not want any part of and that's a Stephenville Yellow Jacket team that is more explosive offensively than the 2012 team (statistically and IMO) and gaining quick ground on being as solid defensively. Some get a little sensitive to hear this and that this years version can't be compared to the 2012 team... I say they are hung up on it. I understand this team hasn't won a SC yet and may not, but they definitely have the same potential the 2012 team did at this point in the season. And for that matter, the same opportunity the 2013 team had. Live to play another week! That's all we can ask for as a team, fans and community.

Here is a fun statistic....since Coach G took over as head coach in 2008 and this being his 7th season as HC, this game will mark the 6th time his teams has reached the Qtr Final game. Against Big Spring; I saw a fire lit under this team. The stands were filled and it felt like old times again. Before the Decatur game I described this Sville team like the 2004 Boston Red Sox. If we were to lose a game; it would have been that game. We were fortunate, and we won that game. Now this team has lots of momentum. They can see a light at the end of the tunnel that they couldn't see back in Week 9 and 10. With that being said, I believe this team makes it to the SC game. This team is hitting on all cylinders now and offensively may be the best team I have seen Stephenville put on a field; which is saying a whole lot considering the teams this program has produced in the past offensively. As a fan of this program it has been fun to watch these past 3 seasons. It is hard to reach this level of the playoffs that many years in row for any program. Congrats to coach G and his staff for a job well done; and lets bring it back to the Ville again this year.

Jacket97
11-29-2014, 02:20 PM
Another Statistic: The last time Stephenville lost to Graham was in 1988 (9-7)....and that happen to be Coach G's senior year of high school. I am sure he is looking forward to this one!

I have said on these threads numerous times that I didn't think this offensive team is as good as 2012's and I think I might have been wrong. This years versions has rolled as of late. I saw a offense that could kill you in every phase of the game. Great pass protection, power run blocking, every receiver making play after play, a stellar player at the quarterback position, and a highly explosive runningback. I saw a offense that scored with ease and imposed their will. We even had the hurry up tempo get a nice little field goal to end the 1st half. I walked away thinking about the dominating performance I just saw. It did take me back to the Wylie game in 2012. A tough, physical game that the Jackets blew wide open. These boys are running wide open right now. The receivers are the most improved group in my opinion. While we don't have a receiver like Brice, everyone one of these guys makes plays. I could be wrong, but I think all of the starters had a touchdown yesterday. I cant wait unitl Friday. This matchup should be a great one!

Pretty good assessment ! The passion is there on both sides !! I'm not doing the shoulda, woulda, coulda, thing but with both BS and Argyle I think we kicked our own butt more than either of them did!! It's highschool football it happens, hell it happens in the pros!! This game is gonna be a true slobber knocker!! Hope to see ya there, safe travels for everyone!! Go Steers

Maybe only relivent to Coach G...I don't think he liked losing that game or tying the B'Wood game that season. Just sayin...doesn't matter to much what happen 15 yrs ago to the kids playing on the field; your right. But a little redemption for the HC couldn't hurt anything.

I cannot wait for Friday night! It has been fun watching this Yellow Jacket team grow and find their identity this season. It took a little longer then maybe us fans wanted but the team has never given up and is now firing on all cylinders! As many have said our offense is virtually unstoppable, special teams is excelling and our defense has proven it has what it takes to get the job done! We have so many play makers on offense that it forces the opposing D to pick their poison. This match up will be fun for sure. Graham is a great team with lots of tradition backing them as well. But I look for the Yellow Jackets to pull away in the second half and win by at least 2 scores!!

Graham's D is fantastic against the run, esp inside--we were a ball-control, run it up the gut team and they effectively neutralized that. Twice. Don't think they have seen anything like Stidham though. Boy can flat throw the ball and is mobile enough to evade the ridiculous Graham front 3. Strength vs Strength. Should be a great one...

“It’s a nightmare,” said Big Spring coach Phillip Ritchey about trying to stop the Texas Tech commit. “You can try everything in the book. You can pressure him and they get rid of it quick. He’s athletic enough that he can scramble and keep plays alive. Their receivers are good, their offensive line is good. I don’t know how somebody is going to stop them.”

converting/defending 3rd and 4th downs is a concern in any game, but in this one..it is paramount!!! key is to not waste plays in 1st and 2nd downs..like so many do IMO..it will be the little things that can manifest into momentum swings and become huge! drive stalling penalties, missed reads/assignments, lack of focus on fundementals and basics! if i were coaching these 2 teams..tackling and blocking drills would take up more time in practice, as well as special teams..
the big players are going to get theirs..its the "other" players that will make the difference in this game!

I have been thinking the exact same thing Hollywood. I think it will play out similarly as well with Graham going stop for stop and score for score the 1st half, but I think the Steer defense will ultimately get tired in the 2nd half and the Jackets will make a few stops and ultimately will open it up. HOWEVER I think Graham will be the most prepared team Stephenville has faced this year, it was quite evident from our game that the Graham coaching staff had been looking ahead to Wylie for some time and I expect they have been looking at Stephenville for awhile now too. I wouldn't be surprised to see Graham pull out the stops pretty early to attempt to put the Jackets on their heels. If the Steer offense can give the defense an early cushion, they will have to opportunity to play that tough ball control offense and keep Stidham and Co. on the sidelines.

If Graham safety's don't find a way to make a play on a ball it's gonna be a long night for the steer D, I pulling for graham all the way and think they can win this game but I can tell you they will have to cover the middle of the field much better then they have been to slow the villes offense.

Nah, just a 30% chance of morning showers forecasted and they'll be from Graham's defense worried about not having enough vO2 max training to keep up with the Jacket O. Mmmhmm!

When I look at Graham it is like looking in the mirror in regards to my Jackets. A bunch of hard working, no quit, blue collar kids that know where the weight room is. It is going to be a fun game. The winner will prolly need a little luck in this one, because that is how evenly I feel these teams are. A lucky bounce, tip, made, or missed call could decide this one.

All smack aside, there is a lot of respect between these two programs. Both teams represent what Region 1 is all about... Hardest working student athletes that love the game of football and work their tails off to be the best they can be. Each have students that move in but for the majority, these are young men born and raised in their hometown. A product of the programs that have helped make Texas HS football the best HS football anywhere. It will be a great game Friday and I'm thrilled to be able to witness these young men and coaching staffs get after it. Here's to Texas HS football being well represented this Friday night at Ram stadium in Mineral Wells.

#1 They are our district mates
#2 Two Stephenville posters came over the the Wylie side during our game vs Graham to say hello and visit for a while. I think that means Graham posters are either rude or they are scared of me!! ;)

Actually, I think Graham's D can be the gamechanger. They obviously are going to have their hands more than full with Stidham and Williams and company. They have the kind of defense that COULD be able to be disruptive to the Yellowjackets offense. Will they? Hmmm....just maybe but it'll be a tall order. Those boys play with the kind of passion it takes to take down a team as dangerous as Stephenville. Will it be enough? I don't know but it's going to be fun to find out!!

Safe travels to all and an injury free, hard fought game for both teams...

Excuse me while I go get more Kleenex! :crying:

I was at that game. Might as well toss it out for stat comparisons. 9 total turnovers. 2 by Graham in final 2 minutes inside the B.S. 20 going in to score to probably win.

If that Graham team shows up, this game is a route. However, just like Stephenville, they have surely improved since then.

Stephenville fans have heard it the past couple years in the playoffs - whoever is next up has the D to stop the Stephenville O, but when they're healthy nobody has done it.

I realize that but it was just an ugly sloppy game. For a 1 game glimpse into what they had to offer I walked away thinking both of these teams stink. Turns out they weren't so terrible after all.

I had the chance to chat with Hugh Sandifer at the Brownwood/SV game and it came up that I was at that game so he asked what I thought so I told him that I thought both teams stunk and he commented that Graham had already beat them lol.

Cooper by far IMO.

Graham lives and breathes on their D. Jarrett has 38 TD(passing) 1 pick all season, their QB has 29 and 12 picks. Everyone of our receivers had a TD last week if I remember correctly. Kaegun and Jarrett both have legs made or armor it seems. Key in on one and the other will take you out. Graham has a good D, no doubt. If the Jacket D shows up again this week it's gonna be tough for Graham IMO.

Agree^.. definitely saw him at his worst. but from my standpopint you could understand. Great Stats, big fan and lots of potential for him. Texas State is lucky to have him. But damn Rattler what knocked him out those two days... flu?

Yes I completely understand and no harm or bad feelings. :twitch: I would have said the same thing.

From Dave Campbells football playoff recap:
Graham. Abilene Wylie was one of the hottest teams in the state heading into the regional semifinals. But the Bulldogs met their match — the monster Graham defensive line led by Dustin McWhorter. The Steers shut down Clay Johnston and the Abilene Wylie offense for most of the night, including the entire second half. Graham advances to the regional final, where it will face aforementioned Stephenville. The Yellowjackets average close to 50 points per game and will be Graham’s toughest test yet. Also, special shout out to the biggest individual winner — Navasota wide receiver Tren’Davian Dickson, who hauled in four touchdown catches in a 54-36 win over El Campo. Dickson now has 34 touchdown receptions on the season, a new state record. The previous record was 33 by Shayne Boyd of New Deal in 1987.

I am not making excuses but--just for the record, we lost Kleffner for the season in the 2nd round game with a re-injured fractured collarbone and Johnston missed the first 2 playoff games with a knee injury. He braced it and played against Graham but had absolutely no burst or speed. Kid played in a lot of pain and gutted it up and gave it his best shot. Even with both of them at 100% it would have been a stretch for us to beat Graham--with one out and the other at maybe 50% it was impossible. Again, not excuses just fact--between them they accounted for 85% of our rushing game. Forced us to throw more and change our gameplan--that played a big part in Friday's performance. Graham's defense played an even bigger part.

My biggest question in this game is whether or not the Steer defense can hold down a healthy Stidham by limiting what he does?

After giving it some thought...I'll be cheering for the Crickets this week.

:crying:

We are not rude, we just like to visit after the clock cleaning!!! :-)http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/12/01/d04695c205262399a081777928fb23c2.jpg

Injury's can sure throw a kink in the works..hit us hard last year..wish every team could play at 100% but i know that will never happen...

Those situations are tough. We lost Freeze & Escalon before even getting started this year and as of today may be without another very important player on Friday. Fingers crossed and praying he is okay, not for athletic reasons but because he is an awesome young man. We will show up and battle no matter what, AW did and they fought hard...I like watching Clay , hes a solid ball player.

I cant imagine what that steer D would be like had they not lost freeze he is a big time game changer. They have done really well to overcome such a loss. Any news on the WR yet that went out last wee?

"When he wants to play?" That's a pretty bold statement for someone who has seen him play 1 game! I would be curious to get Hollywood and VilleD's thoughts on this since I believe they have seen him play a couple of times this year.

I've watched 3 games this season. Against Brownwood, Argyle and Wylie. He is a great athlete and D-lineman. He obviously was flat worn out against Argyle for several reasons. He was playing sick, he had to go head to head with Ralston and the Argyle O-line is very solid. Against Brownwood he had a great game. Against Wylie last Friday night he had another solid performance. Stephenville's O-line will have their work cut out. But they are too a very solid O-line. It's going to be another battle to the end.

I am leaning toward frito pie for this one...with peppers. I dont want to get my nacho hopes up because I hear that mineral wells is not going to have nachos so there will be plenty of room for crow wings to serve the Ville folks....now thats thinking ahead on their part.

I am just glad to say that I was able to move back to the town that has a great community, school, and sports program that I will raise my children in. I am also fortunate enough to be able to say that I grew up here and got to go to school here and play in this program for a few years. Could not be happier for the success our young men have had this year and hope they continue to keep having success!

This program has for the past several years and will continue for the next several years to come produce some great teams. Graham is where I wanted to raise my kids and they have and the last one will graduate from this school in a couple more years. Wouldn't have gone anywhere else.

[QUOTE=the Ville 89;1848438]The Cooper game is really the only one you can take in account. Well if were talking about games we have personally seen... I had the privilege to attend the Argyle vs Graham game and came away un-impressed. The Graham Dline takes too many plays off. And im a fan of Mcwhorter he is huge and can be a difference maker only when he wants to play.[/QUOTE

I think #20 might be just as active as McWhorter! They are both really good.

Ive been watching them both for a long time...they both love this game neither ever take a play off. You wanna see 20 get pissed then take him off that field. They have both played sick and.injured. they both use their bodies as battering rams. When they are tired they keep pushing forward...they are the bash brothers of Graham. Any 4a O line is in for a workout with these two.
