ALVIN — In a game of inches, Sweeny wasn’t able to get a play when they needed it Friday night as the Bulldogs fell to La Marque 19-7 in the Class 4A Division II area round.

“It is a game of inches,” Sweeny Coach Joey Olguin said. “We made some plays but when we needed a catch we couldn’t make it. But the kids didn’t quit. They kept playing and there’s no shame in that.”

The game was a far cry from the first time the two teams met this season, with La Marque winning a 43-29 offensive battle.

The Bulldogs (7-5) came ready to play this time around.

“The last time we played they jumped on us pretty quick and we had to play catch up,” Olquin said. “This time we were settled in from the very start. We let them know we were here.”

It was definitely more of a defensive battle between the two teams, especially in the second half.

Sweeny limited the Cougar offense to 117 total yards in the final two quarters.

Dax McCleary had a fumble recovery in the third quarter for the Bulldogs.

However, the Bulldogs couldn’t get much going on offense either, as La Marque’s defense held Sweeny to 62 total yards in the second half.

LaMarque held a 13-0 lead for most of the first half before Sweeny responded with 1:15 left in the second quarter when Clayton Gilbert caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Cody Erikson.

The touchdown was set up by a 77-yard run by running back Anthany Simmons, who was brought down at the LaMarque 2-yard line.

Three plays later, Erikson found Gilbert in the back of the end zone for the touchdown. Brett Robbins kicked the extra point pull Sweeny with six, 13-7.

Simmons finished the game with 108 yards rushing on 13 carries.

LaMarque was in firm control in the first quarter. The Cougars drove 68 yards for their first touchdown. Quarterback Jalen Williams finished off the drive with a 6-yard touchdown run with 8:44 left on the clock to put the Cougars ahead, 7-0.

LaMarque’s next scoring drive chewed up the last 6:24 of the first quarter and ate into the second quarter. The time-consuming possession was capped off by a 5-yard scoring toss from Williams to Caleb Bell with 10:20 left in the first half.

LaMaque didn’t score again until the fourth quarter, as it sealed the victory with a 5-yard score by Williams.
