We have failed to mention one of the most important factors in this matchup..where to eat!! ;) Slingshot, you are letting us down!!

We have been to Birdville for playoff games before, but I honestly can't remember where we ate either time. Of course there are lots of chain restaurants in the area, but anybody have any suggestions for anything else?

Can't wait til Friday!!! :cheer:

If anyone wants a good seafood place that's not a chain, The Flying Fish is great! Take the Montgomery exit off of I-30, turn right on Montgomery and it's on the left a block down. Right across the street from Railhead BBQ.

The AW fans are going to have a sick feeling in their tummy by the end of the game , so I recommend eating light .

Wylie, Graham renew rivalry in playoffs

Bulldogs hope to avenge September loss

By Jonathan Marshall

jonathan.marshall@reporternews.com 325-676-6736

Having played against each other for years and even sharing the same district, the Wylie and Graham football programs are extremely familiar. Adding to this familiarity is the theme of redemption for the Bulldogs as they get set to face the Steers at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Class 4A Division I regional round at the Birdville Fine Arts/ Athletics Complex in North Richland Hills.

Wylie earned it's ninth straight win last week in an explosive 75-21 victory over Levelland in the area round. The team's last loss was in September, an 18-7 game at home against Graham.

While the loss is in the past for the Bulldogs, it's no secret how big the rematch is.

‟We don't talk about anybody down the line, but everybody knows kind of how the playoff bracket is,” Wylie coach Hugh Sandifer said. ‟Our schedule was so tough this year. I was looking at the bracket. Of the 15 teams besides us left in our division, we've played six. Our kids, they're just excited. They beat us, and anytime you get beat in football, you sting. I don't know if they'll be anymore amped up, but it's a name they know and a team they've played since the seventh grade, so they'll all be excited.” Sandifer's players don't have to be reminded how big this game is. The rematch is an intriguing story line no doubt, but senior quarterback J.T. Cary said it's an honor to still be playing while most teams across the state have turned their jerseys in.

‟The team is really excited,” Cary said. ‟Since Week 3, we've improved so much, and I think just being so blessed to have the opportunity to keep playing like this deep into the playoffs is such a credit to our coaches and our team. We understand how big this game is and to keep playing you got to fight every week to win in the playoffs.” To get where you want to go, your past can't be forgotten. In a game that may have taught the Bulldogs many lessons, there was one that had a major impact in the outcome that night in September.

Wylie turned the ball over five times, which Cary pinpoints as the biggest teaching point from that game.

‟It's got to be the turnovers, just so many turnovers,” he said. ‟You can't win games with five turnovers. It's just unheard of. You've got to limit that. We've done a good job all year since then in limiting turnovers and doing a better job there. I think that's what made us continue to improve.” For a team that has shown tremendous depth at the running back position, the Bulldogs had their worst night on the ground against the Steers as well. They were held to just 32 yards on 26 carries. Wylie added 27 yards through the air.

The Bulldogs are averaging 45.1 points in their last six games. Senior running back and linebacker Clay Johnston said they have to continue that kind of production.

‟We're going to have to put up points,” Johnston said. ‟If we don't put up points, there is no way we're going to win that game. Our offense is going to have to come out and play hard like we have been.” Since that loss the Bulldogs have shown growth in limiting their turnovers. Sandifer understands, however, that both teams have made improvements since their last meeting.

‟I think there was a lot of keys to that game,” Sandifer said. ‟They probably didn't feel they played that good of a football game either. There were a lot of missed opportunities by both teams. They played better than us, obviously, by beating us. Of course turnovers played a factor and I thought their defensive line was dominant in that first game.” The Steers have won the past two matchups against the Bulldogs, including a 35-14 win at home last season. They last played in the same district in 2009. They aren't strangers. The Bulldogs want redemption, and the Steers want to continue their streak in the series. It all adds up to an exciting postseason atmosphere in North Richland Hills.

‟We've been in the same district or played them in nondistrict for the last 30plus years,” Sandifer said. ‟These kids play them seventh grade through varsity. We have a lot of familiarity with those guys. They have a lot of success. They're a good program. They're like us. When they play, they expect to win. They have that when they step on the field. Football is a big deal at Graham just like it is at Wylie. You get two of the better programs in this part of the state hooking up in the third round, it ought to be a good one.” Johnston said the players are certainly pumped up but are trying to keep the proper perspective as the next step in their journey arrives.

‟We can't get too caught up,” Johnston said. ‟We've been fired up. We're talking about our spat that we should wear and our jersey combo, which is pretty fun. But, we just got to focus on the task at hand as coach Sandifer says. Just come out and play ball Friday night.”

Graham-Wylie series adds another chapter

Lauren Roberts/Special to the Times Record News Graham running back Hagen Hughes picks up a first down in the second quarter of the Steers' game against Gainesville Friday night in Gainesville.
When Abilene Wylie fell to Graham in the third week of the season, Hugh Sandifer believes his team learned some important lessons.

The Bulldogs haven't lost since that Sept. 12 meeting. Among the victims of their nine-game winning streak were Big Spring and Stephenville, explosive District 3-4A opponents who they held to 13 total points.

"We learned a lot from that night, and they exposed some things we need to be better at," the longtime Wylie coach said. "We learned we need to take care of the ball better — we had five turnovers against them. You can't expect to stay in the game doing that."

While the teams always match up in the regular season, there will be immensely more at stake Friday night when the Steers (10-2) and Bulldogs (10-2) collide in a Region I-4A Division I regional bout. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Birdville ISD Complex.

Graham claimed an 18-7 victory the first meeting behind Nick Martin's 171 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Although the Bulldogs lost, they held Graham to a season-low in points.

Another low-scoring outcome should be expected because both defenses have talented players, especially up front. Wylie boasts a pair of Division I commits — including linebacker Clay Johnston, who is headed to Baylor and whose father is the strength coach for the San Diego Chargers.

Graham coach Kenny Davidson has also been impressed with Wylie's defensive ends — UTSA commit Baylen Baker (6-5, 260) and Logan Gilliam (6-4, 205), who will put the Steers' offensive line to the test.

"Wylie has been holding everybody down, and one of the reasons is their relentless with their pressure," Davidson said. "Our offense has been scoring a lot of points, but their defense has had a good game against everybody."

Wylie quarterback J.T. Cary has thrown for 1,122 yards and 12 touchdowns, but the Bulldogs are primarily a running team. Sandifer said Trey Kleffner reinjured his collarbone in last week's win over Levelland and will miss the rematch. That means the Steers will see a heavy dose of Johnston (1,059 yards, 20 TDs).

"It was big to have (Kleffner) back, and now we're going to need somebody to step up," Sandifer said. "We've been fortunate to have a lot of depth at that position."

Graham's front is also stout with Texas State commit Dustin McWhorter and Colton Langley at defensive end and Bohner Cottongame starring at middle linebacker. The Steers have forced 35 turnovers with Landon Gonzales leading the way with six interceptions.

Quarterback Landry Turner has thrown for 2,731 yards and 27 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. In the past three games, the junior has 878 passing yards and 10 scores.

The series has been pretty even over the past 15 meetings, with Abilene Wylie winning eight times and Graham claiming seven victories. That includes two Bulldog bi-district victories in the 2002-03 playoffs.

"It's kind of turned into our rivalry game," Davidson said. "Graham's biggest rival used to be Breckenridge, and I don't know if now it's them or not, but we play every year."

The winner will face either Big Spring or Stephenville next week in the state quarterfinals.

Good luck to the SteerNation and the Bulldogs of Wylie tonite. It's been a great season for both squads this season, and both teams are very deserving of high praise. It is unfortunate that only one will advance to the next round, but there can be only one winner in each region. There is much respect across the Texas high school football landscape this season for both teams. Enjoy the game and safe travels.

I would say good luck, but that would be a lie😄 looking forward to kicking some Steer tail! Go Dawgs!

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS — From the first series to the last, Graham left no doubt which of the two superb defenses that took the field Friday night was the best.

For the second meeting this year, the Steers held Abilene Wylie to a single touchdown and forced five turnovers in capturing a 20-7 regional round victory at Birdville Athletics Complex.

Graham's Weston Womack began the game with the first of his two interceptions. Wylie's last drive ended with sack by Dustin McWhorter, the Steers' seventh of the contest.

In between, Todd Parker caught a pair of touchdowns from Landry Turner as Graham made a seven-point halftime lead stand up with a shutout in the final two quarters.

"We felt so confident today. Reading our keys and everything, we had it down," Womack said. "We just knew what they were going to do before every single play, and that just gives us confidence."

The Steers (11-2) advance to the I-4A state quarterfinals to face Stephenville (9-3), which got revenge earlier in the day over Big Spring, 59-32. That matchup will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Mineral Wells.

But there was no revenge to be had in this matchup as Graham won for the third straight time over Wylie.

"It's a tribute to us because that's a good team. That's a well-coached team, that's a disciplined team and they have a lot of talent," Graham coach Kenny Davidson said. "Our defense had to rise up because their defense is good.

"You just love those kind of games where every play has a major impact. We earned the right to get here to play a team like this, and I'm just so proud."

McWhorter, a Texas State commit, and Colton Langley caused Wylie's offense the most trouble. The Graham defensive ends combined for five sacks and pressured the Bulldogs quarterbacks on many throws despite seeing lots of double teams.

With Wylie threatening to tie the game in the second quarter, J.T. Cary was hassled into throwing a ball into coverage, and it was Womack who again came down with it at the 2-yard line, snuffing out the threat.

Graham's offense made enough big plays to keep the Steers in control just like what happened in an 18-7 Week 3 win over the Bulldogs.

Womack's first interception on the third play from scrimmage gave the Steers the ball at the 5, but Wylie made a goal-line stand, stuffing Turner on fourth down from the 1-yard line.

But the Steers got the ball back in good field position and Turner found Parker over the middle for a 15-yard scoring strike on third down.

After Skeeter Buchanan's pick of Cary set the Steers on the Wylie side of the field, Parker caught a 34-yard pass on fourth down that set up Nick Martin's 2-yard TD run. That gave Graham a 14-0 lead with 3:40 left in the half.

Wylie (10-3) turned to Tyler Ward at quaterback, and he directed a 68-yard scoring drive right before halftime, finding Jaxson Money for a 21-yard touchdown pass.

The Bulldogs were still looking for the tying touchdown late in the third quarter when Parker made the biggest play of the second half, taking a short screen pass 80 yards to push the lead to 13 points. Parker finished with four catches for 136 yards, while Turner threw for 203.

"It's all on my linemen. They block everybody, and I just have to make one guy miss," Parker said. "The screen passes are just comfortable. Everybody blocks and you just find a hole and go."

With the way Graham's defense was playing, that 13-point lead felt much more as Wylie couldn't get past its own 29-yard line in the fourth. Jim Bob Perry and Bohner Cottongame registered sacks in the second half, and McWhorter's strip sack of Ward sealed the outcome.

"I thought a lot of good things happened to them. A lot of things didn't happen for us tonight," Wylie coach Hugh Sandifer said. "That happens in the game of football. Sometimes it bounces your way and sometimes it doesn't."

Proud of these boys, over 100 started the journey in 7th grade and 37 finished, that is a big group by most standards. This team has an outright district championship, a share of another and helped the 2012 team take the district crown. They have been on the sidelines for 8 playoff games if my math is right. There are thousands of football players that put away their gear 4 weeks ago and never got to experience even one of these milestones. Proud to have 2 boys part of a such a tradition rich program. Go Dawgs!

Man you have an excellent team for sure. Teams like that are what make.everyone else step it up or go home. That AW team was more than capable of sending any of the teams left to the house. Unfortunately someone has to lose and in most cases the losing team consist of winners. AW equal winners and they showed they are legit this year. There are some really good athletes in AW. I hope we can keep rolling because they will be without a doubt a contributing factor to the success.
