WEST COLUMBIA — The Columbia Roughnecks were back to their winning ways Friday night.

Coming off their first loss of the season in last week's regular-season finale, the Roughnecks took any frustrations they might have had out on the Houston Wheatley Wildcats, with a convincing 62-0 victory in a Class 4A, Division I bi-district playoff game Friday night at Griggs Field in West Columbia.

The Roughnecks (10-1) put the contest away early with 22 points before the opening quarter was halfway over. By the time halftime arrived, Columbia held a dominating 36-0 advantage.

“Our kids came out and played really well,” Columbia head coach Randy Lynch said. “Maybe last week was a wake-up call for us, but the kids practiced well all week and it showed tonight. A lot of kids also got to play. It was a very good win.”

With the victory, Columbia will face Henderson at 2 p.m. Saturday in New Caney. Henderson earned the right to play Columbia with a 48-22 win over Silsbee on Friday.

Against Wheatley (4-7), Columbia dominated every facet of the game. The Roughneck offense finished with 491 yards and had two 100-yard rushers, with Saylaion Dunlap and Dakarius Bell breaking the century mark with 127 and 107 rushing yards, respectively.

The Roughneck defense also forced four fumbles, converting all four into touchdowns. Hunter Grayson recovered two of the fumbles, running one back for a score. Zedrik White and Dennis Moody also recovered fumbles during the game.

As a whole, Columbia’s defense allowed only 127 yards, with 41 of those yards coming on one pass play in the second quarter.

“The defense was flying to the ball,” Lynch said. “We’ve been preaching that all week. Wheatley is a good ball club. The score might not indicate it, but their coaching staff does a great job.

"I think our kids just came out ready to play," he said. "They didn’t let the cold bother them, and it was a good night all around.”

It was apparent that Columbia was looking to put the game away, as the Roughnecks jumped out to a 22-point lead before their fans were settled into their seats.

The Roughnecks scored on their first two possessions of Friday’s game, with Kade Finley opening the barrage with a 35-yard touchdown run on the seventh play of the contest. Brandon Harris then ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

After stopping the Wildcats’ offense, the Roughnecks quickly found the scoreboard again when Jarius Kesee hit a wide-open Maleek Goins for a 57-yard scoring pass and a 15-0 lead.

The Roughneck defense took the spotlight on their next touchdown, as Grayson scooped up a fumble on a botched Wheatley snap and sprinted 56 yards to paydirt and a 22-0 lead with 5:29 remaining in the first quarter.

Columbia scored two more times before the half closed, as Bell ran in a touchdown from 29 yards out and Joe Salazar pounded in another from one-yard out for the 36-0 lead. Bell rushed for 106 yards in the first half.

The Roughnecks scored on their first two possessions of the second half to up the tally to 50-0 just three minutes into the third quarter. Registering touchdowns were a 33-yard Kesee-to-Steve Perkins pass and a 33-yard Goins run.

From that point, the reserves took over and added two more touchdowns, with Dunlap and Steven Crocker pounding in one-yard scoring runs. Dunlap led the team with 127 rushing yards, all coming in the second half.

With a running game piling up 382 total yards, Kesee didn’t have to pass often. He was effective when he did, however, completing four of six passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Floyd Green paced Wheatley with 77 rushing yards, while Wildcats quarterback De’Avian Wright completed three of 12 passes for 54 yards.
