View Full Version : Region I - Bi-District: Sweetwater Mustangs (10-0) vs. Perryton Rangers (7-3)

Sweetwater Red
11-13-2014, 10:38 AM
Thursday - November 13th at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium in Canyon.

Sweetwater gets a tough draw in the first round having to face the one of the toughest
fourth place teams in the state. They are rated fourth behind Brownwood, Carthage and
Kilgore as far as fourth place teams go.

These two teams have met in the playoffs twice before in back to back years with
Sweetwater winning both games. In 2001 Sweetwater beat Perryton 33-20. The
following year was a bit more exciting. The Mustangs won in the final seconds 28-27.
Perryton returned a fumble for a TD very early in the game and on that play they also
knocked our QB out...literally. He laid on the field unconcious and didn't get up for
nearly 15-20 minutes. Well Perryton, much like Snyder used to be, refused to take
a knee. Some of our fans took exception to that and began shouting things like
"Take a knee Perryton!, Show some class! and Terrible!". Finally you hear a few
mom voices on Perryton's side yelling take a knee Rangers! Which they eventually
do after our QB has been on the ground for 10 minutes or so. Now whether you
believe a team should take a knee or not is up to you. But, for those that do then
read the recap of the game below. I think it was poetic Justice.

Perryton head coach Gary Newcomb couldnt find the words to properly express his disappointment Friday night, although stunned might have been appropriate.

Ranger quarterback Bo Merrells 2-yard run with 1:10 left to play gave Perryton a 27-21 lead over the Sweetwater Mustangs, and seemingly a Class 3A Division II area playoff round victory.

However, Sweetwater backup quarterback Kendall Carrillo, subbing for injured starter Jeremy Thompson, hooked up with Giles Montgomery for a 27-yard gain, and then scored on a 3-yard run with 15 seconds to play as Sweetwater shocked Perryton, 28-27, before 1,000 fans at Kimbrough Stadium.

I dont know how you can play any better than that and not win, said Newcomb, whose team fell to Sweetwater in the area round for the second consecutive year and ended its season 8-4. We came out in the second half and played better. I just cant talk right now.

The Rangers struggled in the first half, managing only five first downs while committing eight penalties and committing two turnovers.

Perryton trailed 21-9 despite not scoring an offensive touchdown.

Ranger Trey Allen returned a Mustang fumble 35 yards for a touchdown, while teammate Brett Watson blocked a Mustang punt for a safety. Allen also booted a 44-yard field goal in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 21-12.

Merrell scored Perrytons first offensive touchdown with 6:25 to play with a clutch 2-yard run on fourth and less than a yard.

Sweetwater turned the ball over on downs on its next possession at the Perryton 25. The Rangers took advantage of two key plays on the go-ahead drive.

Merrell hit a wide-open Anthony Newcomb for a 59-yard gain on third-and-11, and Jake Waide burst up the middle for 19 yards on third-and-15 from the Mustang 22, setting up a two-yard touchdown run by Merrell for a 27-21 lead with 1:10 to play.

The Mustangs took over at their own 35 with 1:06 left in the game.

Following a 9-yard run and a penalty on Perryton, its 12th of the game, Carrillo threw his second jump ball of the game to Montgomery, who hauled in the pass to the Ranger 5.

Carrillo, who took over in the second quarter following an injury to Thompson, finished with 114 yards on 17 carries. He completed only three passes, but one was a touchdown to Montgomery in the second quarter.

Thanks and I've already looked at the forecast lol. The predicted low temp for next Friday in Stephenville
is three times what the temperature was last night. So, we should be good.
