The Tigers will be facing the mirror image of themselves when they face the Giddings Buffaloes on Thursday night.

“They are an explosive team,” Wharton Coach Tim Finn said. “They definitely can move the football and put points on the board.”

The Buffaloes averaged 37 points per game on the season and 44 points in district games.

Defensively, they’ve scored two shutouts. They are a very athletic team, Finn said, and he pointed out their regional championships by the school’s relay track teams.

‘They are a very talented, physical team,” Finn said. “They are a mirror image of us.”

Finn added, “On paper, it’s two teams with a lot of explosive players. It’s going to be a tough matchup.”

Running back Raylon Hickey is the team’s leading rusher with 1,500 yards so far this year, and he’s only third among their district’s rushers.

Finn said Jason James is a good two-way player for Giddings.

“They have a lot of people who contribute on both sides of the ball,” Finn said.

Finn said on paper it looks like the game could be a high-scoring affair.

“There are two solid quarterbacks,” Finn said. “Both teams have a lot of weapons.”

Giddings enters the game with a 6-4 record, while the Tigers are 7-3 for the year.

Wharton took second place in District 12-4A Division II after defeating Sweeny, 52-23, last week.

“The kids got off to a great start,” Finn said, noting that Wharton jumped out to a 19-0 lead. “We scored on defense. That was exactly the way we wanted to start.”

Quarterback Joseph Krenek completed 10 of 16 passes for 160 yards and looked good after playing in his first game in three weeks because of an injury.

“I’m happy with the way he played,” Finn said. “He was a little bit rusty, but it wasn’t just him. A number of things need to be cleaned up before the playoffs.”

A few junior varsity players were moved up for the game, and several more should be added to the roster for the playoffs.
