SWEENY BULLDOGS (2-1, 6-3) at WHARTON TIGERS (2-1, 6-3)

OVERVIEW: In a fight for second place in District 12-4A Division II, the Bulldogs and Tigers look evenly matched. Even during their 44 previous meetings, only one game separates them. The Bulldogs go in with an offense that is registering 390.8 yards a game while giving up 224.3 on defense. Wharton is averaging 372.3 yards on offense and is giving up 262.7 yards a contest. Both teams have fumbled the ball 28 times this season, with the Tigers losing 12 and the Bulldogs 19 of them. The Bulldogs have recovered 12 of 29 fumbles on defense while Wharton has eight recoveries out of 23 fumbles. The Tigers do have an edge on interceptions, 13-5.

Quarterback Cody Erikson (92-481 rushing yards, 5.23 per carry, eight TDs) and Charlie Jones (48-458, 9.54 per carry, seven TDs) have picked up the slack for injured senior Anthany Simmons (63-490, 7.78 per carry, TD) who’s been out for quite a few games. Erikson (103-172-6, 1,384 passing yards, 12 TDs) leads the district in passing with Wharton’s Joseph Krenek (95-155-3, 1,277 yards, 10 TDs) right behind him. The Tigers top runner is sophomore Benjamin Baylor Jr. (74-602 yards, 8.14 per carry, eight TDs). Between Wharton and Sweeny, they have the top six receivers in the district. Tiger receiver Ashton Branch (34-512, two TDs) leads the district with Sweeny’s Clayton Gilbert (33-459, three TDs) a close second.
