If anyone from Canyon Lake or Taylor can keep us informed on the score there that would be great. Sealy meets up with the winner of that match.

COLUMBUS — The Sweeny Lady Bulldogs could not sustain the constant attack from the Columbus Lady Cardinals in the Class 4A Region III bidistrict round of the volleyball playoffs Monday.

Sweeny was swept 25-17, 25-14, 25-17 to finish the 2014 season 18-12 overall.

“I am really proud of my team because we always want that big W, but they didn’t get intimidated by their big hitters,” Sweeny coach Loure Dews said. “So I have very little to complain about my team.

“I am really proud of my seniors because they came in with me and a lot of them were on their first year of varsity,” she said.

Columbus (35-11), with big hitting from sophomore Hali Winoskie (17 kills) and junior Cheyenne Huskey (16 kills), was just too much for the Lady Bulldog defense.

The Lady Cardinals took a quick 10-2 lead in the first game after a set from Huskey to Winoskie, who knocked it down for a winner. Leading 19-7, it seemed like the first game was going to be an easy one for Columbus.

But then senior Kelly Vargas stepped into the serving role. After getting an initial ace on her first serve, Vargas proceeded to bring Sweeny back within a 19-14 deficit. During her sequence, sophomore Jada McKnight had a block at the net, senior Cristi Johnson hit a big shot off the blockers at the net and McKnight came right back with a return kill on the Columbus defense.

The Lady Bulldogs came within four points, 20-16 but Winoskie got back on track and had two big kills down the stretch as the Lady Cardinals took the first game.

Sweeny took its first lead of the match on the first point of the second game, when senior Heaven Fields had a big dig against Winoskie as the ball landed in the back row away from the Columbus players for a 1-0 lead.

But the Lady Cardinals roared back with back-to-back shots from Huskey as they opened up a 5-3 lead. Sweeny fought back and got within a point of Columbus after Fields served up an ace, 7-6. However on Fields’s next serve, the ball went beyond the inbound line.

Columbus rolled from that point as the Lady Bulldogs missed a couple of shots and then freshman Isabel Theut had a big point off the Sweeny defense to open up an 11-7 lead.

The Lady Bulldogs just had no answer for Winoskie, especially when Huskey was setting her up.

With a 2-0 lead, the Lady Bulldogs faced the end of the season as senior Mallory Weaver saw her first action by blocking a shot at the net to give Sweeny a 1-0 lead.

Freshman Marissa Soistman got in a swing of her own for a 2-0 advantage.

The combination of Huskey and Winoskie gave the Lady Cardinals the lead for good. Sweeny came within two points a couple of times before the Lady Cardinals put it in high gear to clinch the match.

“Tonight I saw my team play better then they had all year, so no complaints,” Dews said. “Their outside hitters adjusted well after we changed the rotations. We did everything we could but grow, but she was hitting over our blockers and there was nothing we could do about that.”

Mekayla “KK” Gurley, the fifth senior on the team, had some big digs in the match as well.

Columbus will move on to meet either Cuero or Liberty Hill in the area round next.
