EL CAMPO — Brazosport surrendered three scoring runs of more than 40 yards in the first quarter to put itself in an early hole it couldn’t escape on Friday.

El Campo rushed for 355 yards in dominating the Ships, 45-20, in a District 12-4A game that keeps the Ricebirds tied with Columbia for the district lead. The two teams will decide the district champion when they face off Friday at Griggs Field.

The Ricebirds opened the scoring just 17 seconds into the game when Deadrick Hollaway ripped off a 63-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead.

Brazosport answered after an El Campo fumble — one of three turnovers by the home team, all converted into points by the Ships. A 2-yard run by Nathan Lewis knotted the game at 7 with 8:12 left in the opening quarter.

Back-to-back scoring runs by Alontae Harris of 44 and 77 yards quickly tore open the game, though, making it a 21-7 advantage at the end of one quarter.

El Campo stretched its lead to three scores after J.D. Henderson jumped on an Exporter fumble. Kevin Dove converted the turnover to points with a 1-yard run with 9:06 remaining in the half.

Brazosport’s Jeremiah Credit responded with a long touchdown of his own, scooping up an El Campo fumble and returning it 75 yards to cut the lead to 28-14, but the Ships would get no closer.

A 36-yard field goal just seconds before the half made it 31-14 Ricebirds, and touchdown runs of 8 yards by D.J. Washington and 30 yards by Henderson in the second half put the game out of reach at 45-14.

After another El Campo fumble, Brazosport rounded out the scoring on a Na’Vontae Darthard run with 3:46 remaining.

Brazosport falls to 1-3 in the district and 2-7 overall with only a home game against Stafford next Friday remaining on its schedule. El Campo improves to 4-0 and 8-1.
