COLUMBIA roughNECKS (3-0, 8-0)

at BAY CITY BLACKCATS (0-3, 0-8)

7:30 p.m., Friday

at Blackcat Stadium

OVERVIEW: Columbia has been challenged in back-to-back weeks, against Stafford (23-16) last week and the Needville Bluejays (49-38) the week before.

So, while this one looks like a cakewalk, think again because the Blackcats have some athletes.

The Columbia offense continues to pound away on opponents at 407 yards a game, with most of it coming on the ground.

The hard-charging Dakarius Bell (201-1,339 yards, 6.66 per carry, 12 TDs) and the quickness of Maleek Goins (28-297 yards, 10.61 per carry, three TDs) are giving opposing defenses fits.

But, it is also the Roughneck defense (195.4 yards per game) that continues to make plays, recovering 18 of 25 fumbles and making eight interceptions, led by junior Kalen Williams’ four picks. Kicker Jacob Combs has also executed 32 extra points along with five field goals for the ’Necks.

Senior quarterback Jarius Kesee (48-79, 838 yards, eight TDs) gives Columbia another dimension with his arm. He’s only thrown two interceptions all season. In the 70th meeting between these two squads the Blackcats lead the series 51-18 with Bay City winning last year (61-36).

Bay City is winless this season, the offense (187.6 yards) ranks last in the district, and the defense (377.3) is giving up a bunch of yards. But, these Blackcats are talented.

Senior quarterback Zavian Gartica (55-116, 494 yards, two TDs) can throw it a mile if he has to. But Gartica has also thrown nine interceptions. Sam Fisher (111-398 yards, 3.59 per carry, two TDs) and Gartica (65-243, six TDs) lead the ground attack for the Blackcats.
