BRAZOSPORT— The Brazosport Exporters (1-2, 2-6) have a daunting task Friday, as they will contend with 13th-ranked El Campo (3-0, 7-1) and District 12-4A’s leading rusher Kevin Dove.

Dove and the rest of the Ricebirds have been a menace on offense so far this season, as they enter the game averaging 409.8 yards and 37.6 points per contest.

El Campo’s strong offense is powered by Dove, who has rushed for 1,290 yards and 17 touchdowns through the first eight games.

To contend with the Ricebirds, Brazosport coach Ben Rudolph knows the team must slow down Dove.

“We have to get to him early,” Rudolph said, of the key to contending with the potent running back’s ability.

In addition to holding their own on defense, the Exporters will also look to get into a rhythm on the offensive side of the ball.

“Sometimes, the best defense is a good offense,” Rudolph said. Brazosport’s offense features several key players, who will all factor into the attack.

Junior Navontae Darthard leads the Exporters with 555 rushing yards and six touchdowns this season, but he is followed closely on the stat sheet by senior Nathan Lewis (428 rush yards, five scores) and fellow junior Jeremiah Credit (399 rush yards, three touchdowns).

Each member of the trio figures to make an impact on the game, as Rudolph explained the best philosophy against any opponent is to spread the ball around to the team’s playmakers.

But the Ricebirds are not just a regular district foe. El Campo is 19-12 all-time against Brazosport, and has recorded a victory in each of the last five meetings.

However, the Exporters, with Rudolph at the helm, are hoping to bring an end to that streak Friday.

“We’re going to try to put our best four quarters of football together Friday,” the coach said.
