I know it's gonna be the talk of the week since it's gonna determine the #1 seed and they're undefeated and ranked ahead of us almost everywhere but I will honestly be shocked out of my mind if HJ even comes close. Have at it.

Common Opponents

HJ 35, Jasper 21
WOS 34, Jasper 7

HJ 27, LCM 7
WOS 29, LCM 12

HJ 35, Orangefield 28
WOS 42, Orangefield 14

HJ 54, Hamshire-Fannett 39
WOS 54, Hamshire-Fannett 21

All-Time Record against HJ 10-0
What they do have in their favor is they had a bye week this week and it will be played @ HJ so they have time to prepare and will have home-field advantage

I've watched HJ play and all WOS has to do is stop the HJ offense to get them off the field maybe 2 times and they have a good chance to win. Of course, that is easier said than done this year.
The HJ defense is really fast to the ball, but that allows misdirection plays to work against them. You need a defensive line that can get penetration and disrupt the QB as he distributes the ball to their backs. Again, easier said than done. Should be a great game.

WOS has only given up 40 points+ in six games EVER out of 440 total. Don't think many teams can tout that. We held Navasota, Gilmer and Carthage to 38, 35 and 28 respectively in our only meetings. The 40 point mark was reached by 6A Beaumont West Brook, twice to Jasper, once to Coldspring, once to Nederland and the record is Wimberley's 52 against us in the semifinals when they won state in 2005. Coach Thompson has been with us for getting close to 40 years and he's the King of Defense. Not gonna happen... I'll be happy to eat crow if it actually happens. I'll applaud you.

I know what you mean, I was just thinking on how this season has gone so far and it just seems like anything is possible. If I was a betting man, I would say that this will be one of those games that Special Teams could make the difference here.

Hmm.. Held Navasota to 38? Hadn't you all held 7 or 8 opponents scoreless before running into Navasota?

That 38 points was more than what Bellville and La Marque gave up to the Rattlers.

I'll take HJ in an upset.

9 shutouts that season to be exact but point is... it's a rarity to see 40 points hung on the Mustangs.

Yeah I'm really not sure why what you said would be taken as a slight...

Anyway, this should be the region III game of the week!

This will be a test of the WOS defense. They held Foster a ranked 5a program(7-1) to 17 so we know they can get the job done. WOS by 14.

Different offenses though, Pud. RF runs the spread, HJ the Wing T. This will be the third week in a row we've played a Wing- T team.

Hamshire-Fannett does not run the wing-T which was WO-S last opponent.

I thought Liberty ran the spread?

HF runs the double wing most of the time... OF which was our opponent before HF runs the single wing... HJ runs the single wing much like OF, but regardless, you prepare for both of them the same. Which is my point.

Liberty runs the spread some but they also run the Wing-T quite a bit, but that was our first game in district.

Looks like WO-S has got their swagger back after that blindside by Newton.I say blindside but I see where Newton beat the # 4 3A team this week.Anyway,HJ just gives up a lot of points and that ain't good when you have to face the best team youv'e seen this year.HJ has a good ball club and have improved from last year but not 40 pts better.WO-S takes this one by 3 TD's.

Yeah I don't like doing a bunch of common opponent comparisons either. We have beaten common opponents worse, but not a lot worse. This game will come down to the individual match ups. I think if there were anything to give the Mustangs an advantage, it would be the fact that we've played several teams that run the same or similar offense as HJ runs. That, and HJ has not seen a team that passes as effectively as the Mustangs. However, the individual match up issue will be the biggest deciding factor.

HJ is for real this year. Jasper lost to both teams, but I must stay (always almost) with WOS until HJ proves on the field that they can beat them. Regardless of their record, when the chips (Mustang chips!) are on the line, WOS gets tough.

Up to this point, that's all we Mustang fans have to hang onto is the past. We haven't been to the semi-final round since 2005 and have lost in the 4th round the last 3 years in a row. I think we will be able to start talking about current events real soon, though, as the Seniors this year did not lose a game from the 7th grade up. Jack Dallas class (Sophomores) have only lost 1 since then and both the 7th and 8th grades, if they win this week (which they should) will both be undefeated for the first time in school history. So there is plenty of talent in the pipeline.

In my opinion WOS may be a more formidable opponent then Gilmer based on strength of schedule. While Gilmer has mowed down every team they have encountered by huge margins they have not played a top ranked team. WOS on the other hand has played 4 or 5 very tough teams. Granted they lost two of those games but in the end they have been battle tested and are stronger for it. WOS knows what it is like going into a game against a dominating opponent and that gives them a psychological edge. Talent wise there is not a lot of daylight between these two teams. A more tempered mind set can make a big difference in the big game.

That would require HJ to go through Bellville then La Grange to have a chance for a shot at WOS who would have to go through La Marque or Giddings (or Caldwell). We're talking loooooooooooong shot here.

Yes it's possible, but there are some good teams standing in the way, you never know. I think HJ will slay at least one giant, tho.
