10-24-2014, 11:47 AM
I'm a 1962 Atlas-Agena model (for those slow in math, and you know who you are, that makes me 52)

I had to look up the Rocket models from this era and came across this interesting article (from the BBC), I did not know we sent a rocket that actually landed on the moon in 1962:

1962: First US rocket lands on Moon
The American Moon rocket Ranger IV has landed on the far side of the moon but has failed to send back pictures due to a technical fault.
It is the first time an American spacecraft has successfully reached the Moon - the Russians achieved the first ever lunar impact in 1959.

However, the main aim of the mission - to take television pictures of the lunar surface - was not achieved after all internal power on board the spacecraft failed two hours after launch.

The Ranger IV Atlas-Agena rocket, which took off from Cape Canaveral on 23 April, is one of the most sophisticated space machines ever developed.

Crash-land

It was specifically designed to crash-land on the Moon after capturing a series of images of the lunar surface on its approach.

The television pictures on board were designed to begin operating when the rocket came within 2,500 miles (4,023km) of the lunar surface - 40 minutes before impact - and then send an image of the Moon back to Earth every 13 seconds.

After the loss of internal power the spacecraft could only be tracked using the tiny radio transmitter in the lunar capsule. This is how scientists confirmed it had actually reached the Moon.

The latest mission was identical to that of Ranger III, which launched on 26 January this year.

But the expected pictures from that mission were not produced because the rocket missed the Moon by 22,862 miles (36,793km).

Nasa scientists will be hugely disappointed by this latest failure as a successful mission would have given them the first ever close-up images of the mysterious lunar surface.

Ranger IV was also equipped with a seismometer and radio transmitter, designed to be released in a small capsule from the rocket before impact and land on the Moon in sufficiently good condition to measure the frequency of natural earthquakes in the body of the Moon.

Images from this would have been sent back to Earth for up to 30 days for vital research.

How did I know when I was old? When I was climbing through a bob-wur fence, lost my balance, fell out on the ground on the other side and just laid there rather than rolling/bouncing back up like a young feller. Yep, I just laid there and enjoyed the view, rested a bit and then contemplated the best course of action to get my self back up on my feet again. So, when I think about it, gettin old ain't too bad after all. I'm seeing stuff I never seen before (layin on the ground). I'm gettin more rest (layin on the ground). And I'm having serious conversations with myself (how do I get up off the ground).

I realized I was old, out of shape, etc. when....

My annual trip to Idaho for two weeks which involved many excursions up and down creek banks, several hikes ranging from 1/2 mile to about 8 miles, working at about 8000 feet, and post work beer consumption all diminished significantly. I had to remove my self from the longest of the hikes so the team would not have to extricate me from the back woods via helicopter. My old back and knees just wouldn't hold up. Damn 65 year old man from wyoming was leading the charge of the team who are mostly 20 somethings. Hopefully I get the back and knee fixed and back at it next year. I guess age is all relative to when your body starts going south on you. :dispntd::dispntd::dispntd::dispntd: Wait maybe this wasn't age, just being out of shape. I'm gonna blame it on age.

24. By the way Brownwood fans, I left the Stephenville Empire-Tribune and am now the Online News Editor at the Bulletin. Looking forward to meeting some of ya'll.

Welcome aboard Caleb. I don't live in Brownwood any longer but read the on-line version of the Bulletin. I guess the Big Spring loss was the final straw (and it was time to get out)? Don't worry the Lions will get back on track in a year or two and you'll be happy you made the move.

Whoever is publishing that brownwood examiner has quite the sense of humor. The article about the lions having the slowest no huddle offense was great. Some of the other article they post are also very funny.
