SWEENY- Sweeny was the model of control Friday night as the Bulldogs methodically dismantled Columbus, 25-2, to open play in District 12-4A, Division II.

The Bulldogs (5-2, 1-0) never punted in the contest as they rolled up 387 yards of offense. The defense shut out the Cardinals, limiting them to 192 total yards, forcing seven punts and picking up one turnover.

The only blemish was when Columbus recorded a safety midway through the second quarter.

“I’m proud of the kids and the effort they gave,” Sweeny coach Joey Olguin said. “We did some things that slowed us down at times, but the offense played excellent and the defense really had a huge game. I’m really proud of

that group.”

The only thing the Bulldogs could have asked for was more points. One field goal was blocked and there was a bad snap on another. The Bulldogs also turned the ball over once at the Columbus 7-yard-line in the first quarter.

Olguin was happy with the way the offense controlled the ball and the clock.

“The kids are really starting to grasp what we’re asking them to do on offense,” he said. “They know where to go and know what to do and it’s really starting to pay off now.”

Derek Davis got the scoring going for the Bulldogs with 9:18 left in the first quarter when he hit the end zone from 41 yards out on a reverse play. The score came with the Bulldogs facing fourth-down-an- 10.

The two-point conversion failed, leaving Sweeny up 6-0.

Another big play put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard again to start the second quarter. Dallas Blackstock caught a 51-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Cody Erikson just 14 seconds into the period. The play capped a 74-yard drive. A two-point conversion run failed, leaving Sweeny with a 12-0 lead.

Columbus scored a safety by tackling Anthany Simmons in the end zone with 7:27 left in the second quarter, but Sweeny responded.

After the Bulldog defense held on downs on the next Columbus offensive possession, the Sweeny offense marched 71 yards for another touchdown.

Erikson capped the drive with a 6-yard touchdown run with 3:52 left in the second quarter. Brett Robbins’ kick put Sweeny up 19-2.

A key play on the drive came when Charlie Jones caught a 35-yard pass from Erikson to the Cardinal 25 to keep things moving.

After Blayne Bailey intercepted a Columbus pass, the Bulldogs struck quickly to beat the clock. Davis caught a 51-yard pass down to the Columbus 12 with four seconds left in the half. Blackstock kicked a 29-yard field goal as the half expired to leave the Bulldogs with a 22-2 lead at intermission.

Sweeny continued to control the ball in the second half. Blackstock scored the only points in the final two periods when he kicked a 37-yard field goal with 42 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs continue district play when they travel Friday to Bellville.
