Snyder game important for 'Jackets' season goals

It’s hard to take anyone seriously who suggests that a football team with state title hopes would consider a game against a 2-5 team a major step toward meeting their goals.

That is until you hear the explanation of the importance of the Yellow Jackets’ game against Snyder this Friday from SHS Coach Joseph Gillespie.

“This game has a lot of implications with it,” he said. “There’s a lot riding on this game. So this, to me, is probably the biggest game of the season for us, so far.”

Gillespie has tremendous respect for the Tigers and their offensive coordinator Curtis Lowery, who was the offensive line coach for Stephenville last year.

“We can’t take them for granted,” Gillespie said. “We can’t afford to look ahead. With this game, we’ve got an opportunity to do several things.

“We want to win a district championship outright. Undefeated. Undisputed. That’s what we want. Secondly, we have the opportunity to be district champions for the fourth year n a row. Don’t know that’ ever been done here.

“Thirdly, we have the opportunity to secure a spot in the playoffs.”

The Tigers have had some hard knocks this season, falling to quality competition like Littlefield and Monahans in non-district games, then drawing Big Spring in their district opener last week, a 49-6 loss.

But they have had some positives, as well. Snyder, which received votes in the Texas High School Coaches Association Class 4A Region I poll, knocked off Shallowater three weeks ago, a team that had entered the contest unbeaten.

“Snyder loves its football,” Gillespie said. “Their kids are going to play hard regardless of the record. They’re hard-nosed West Texas football kids.”

Still, the Yellow Jackets are ranked No. 6 in the state and No. 1 in the region. They’re fresh off a 40-21 thumping of their biggest rival. What’s to keep them from becoming complacent against a team with Snyder’s record?

“We tell them exactly those same things,” Gillespie said, referring to the team’s goals for the game. “And we’ve talked all season long about the maturity of the football team. The characteristics of a great football team. We’ve also talked about the time to gel, when it all comes together.”

And the coach thinks that gelling is about to take place for the ‘Jackets.

“We’re approaching that time right now,” he said. “Week 9 or week 10, that’s when you can say, as a team, as a staff, as a player, this is who we are. This is who I am as a player. This is who we are as an offensive, defensive unit, as a special team. This is the genetic makeup of our football team.”

He added that the team will continue to work hard and root out deficiencies, but the team is fast becoming its best version of itself.

“Were going to work hard to perfect our trade,” Gillespie said. “But if you’re a bad tackler by that point, you’re probably going to remain a bad tackler. It doesn’t mean we won’t continue to work on it.”

Former SHS coach Lowery is in the process of installing a multiple offense at Snyder, an offense similar to Stephenville’s.

“They are balanced,” Gillespie said. “Well balanced. They’re 50/50, run/pass, straight down the line. You can break it down by formations and it stays the same. They will spread you out and give you a lot of formations, a lot of motion, try to create mismatches.”

Snyder’s main offensive weapon is quarterback Kodi Maxfield, who leads the team in rushing with 569 yards, and in passing, throwing for more than 1,100 yards and nine TDs.

However, his eight interceptions are glaring.

Stephenville’s offense is run through Senior QB Jarrett Stidham. Stidham is currently second in the state in total offense with 2,381 yards. He has thrown for almost 1,900 yards and is completing 72 percent of his tosses.

Even with a huge statistical advantage and a big advantage in season record, Gillespie is adamant Friday’s game is the biggest of the season for his team.

“Every game’s a playoff game,” he said. “Every game’s a big game.”
