4A Recap from DCTF....

Class 4A

Overall Thoughts

Class 4A has been a little crazy this year, but this week, everything went according to plan. That doesn’t mean there weren’t some classics, it just means the favorites came away on top in every single matchup. So let’s talk about some of those ranked winners that impressed the most. Up in DI, Stephenville has no issues with upstart Brownwood, taking home a 41-20 victory. The Yellowjackets suffered a setback a few weeks ago in a loss to Lubbock Cooper, but they look the part of a state title contender. Speaking of state title contenders, La Vernia once again had a banner win, this time a 29-7 dismantling of Rockport-Fulton. That defense led by linebackers Noah McMeans and Kolby Bullard is downright scary. Down in DII, we expected Gladewater to beat Tatum. But we didn’t expect Gladewater to literally beat Tatum to a pulp. Gladewater and star defensive tackle Daylon Mack proved they are one of the elite small-schools in the state with a dominating 52-8 victory.

Biggest Winner

Cuero. Just go ahead and say cardiac Cuero! In the 104th meeting between Cuero and Yoakum, the Gobblers overcame a 21-0 first quarter deficit to come out on top, 44-34. As they say, anything can happen in a rivalry game, and this is proof. So how was Cuero able to rally? The answer is simple: D’Anthony Hopkins. The UTSA commit was an absolute workhorse, carrying the ball 37 times for 371 yards and four touchdowns. By the way, the victory snapped Yoakum's three-game winning streak over the Gobblers. Cuero remains ranked No. 9 in our 4A DII rankings and is a South Texas powerhouse you won’t want to meet in the playoffs.

Team To Watch

Henderson. It seems like every week we talk about Gilmer, Gladewater, Kilgore and Carthage. But don’t sleep on Henderson out in #bEASTexas. The Lions are out to a 5-1 start and are coming off a huge 38-16 victory over aforementioned Carthage. Henderson also has quality victories over Daingerfield and on the road at Newton and Athens. In fact, Henderson’s only loss of the season came in Week 2 to Atlanta, which has risen to No. 3 in our latest 4A DII rankings. A name you need to know: Zane Boles. One of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in East Texas, Henderson threw for 122 yards, rushed for 133 yards and scored three total touchdowns this week.
