WEST COLUMBIA — With a defense allowing very little, the offense didn’t have to work too hard Friday night as the Columbia Roughnecks finished off nondistrict play with a 50-7 homecoming victory over Edna.

The victory moved the Roughnecks to 5-0 for the season.

Columbia’s defense held the Cowboys to 54 total yards, most of those coming in the second half, and didn’t allow a first down until the final two quarters. The Columbia D also forced five turnovers.

The offense generated 401 yards, with 302 coming on the ground. Running back Dakarius Bell had 195 yards on 21 carries as a multitude of backs were able to get carries late in the game. The ’Necks averaged 9 yards per play.

“We did some good things,” Columbia coach Randy Lynch said. “Defensively, we played well again. Offensively, we moved the ball well at times. We need things to be more balanced on that side of the ball. Our district is really tough; we’re going to have to be more balanced.”

The defense set the tone for the Roughnecks again, as they held the Cowboys to minus-6 yards in the first half. They also forced four turnovers in the first two quarters and limited the Cowboys to 16 offensive plays. Kade Finley and T.J. Penney had fumble recoveries in the first half.

Maleek Goins got things started for Columbia when he capped a 55-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown run with 10:44 left in the first quarter.

It was the first of three touchdowns for Goins.

On Edna’s first offensive possession, Columbia defensive back Kalen Williams got the first of his two interceptions in the game with 10:30 left in the first quarter. That led to a 29-yard Jacob Comer field goal with 8:04 left in the first.

With 4:22 left in the opening quarter, Caylon Fletcher caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jarius Kesee to put Columbia up 17-0.

Williams started the second quarter with his second interception to set up the next Columbia touchdown. Bell finished off a 54-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown run to put Columbia up 24-0 with 10:10 left in the first half.

Brandon Harris finished off the first-half scoring for the Roughnecks when he capped a 56-yard drive with a 26-yard touchdown run 2:39 before halftime to help put Columbia up 31-0.

Goins started the scoring in the second half when he returned a punt 53 yards for a touchdown with 10:12 left in the third quarter.

After Landon O’Connor put Edna on the scoreboard with a 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, Columbia went on the march again.

Goins finished off a 59-yard drive with his third touchdown on a 32-yard pass from Kesee with 5:34 left in the game.

After Dennis Moody recovered an Edna fumble at the Cowboy 8, fullback Joe Salazar put the final Columbia points on the scoreboard with a 5-yard touchdown run with 3:26 left in the game.

Columbia has next week off before starting District 12-4A Division 1 play against Brazosport.

It will be a good one. Columbia side was so packed you couldn't fit a fart in edgewise. I hate homecoming...
