SWEENY — The Sweeny Bulldogs used a potent rushing attack to pull away from a previously unbeaten Hitchcock team on the way to a 42-14 victory Friday in Sweeny.

The Bulldogs dominated the line of scrimmage throughout the contest, rushing for 423 yards and five touchdowns. Three of those scores came off runs by speedy senior Charlie Jones.

Jones found the end zone on runs of 21, 31 and 35 yards. His final run was particularly impressive, as he ran to the sideline, reversed across the field to escape traffic and then hurdled a Hitchcock defender on his path to the end zone.

For the game, Jones finished with 117 yards on the ground. Not to be outdone, Anthany Simmons was also a force to be reckoned with, gaining 112 rushing yards.

“He was a real bright spot for us tonight,” Sweeny coach Joseph Olguin said of Jones. “We wanted to get our running game going early. Him and Anthany (Simmons) are a heck of a duo back there for us.”

Hermond Holmes and Jaylin Carter also scored on running plays of 12 and seven yards, respectively. Rounding out the Bulldogs’ scoring was a 12-yard Cody Erikson to Jacob Mathis pass early in the fourth quarter.

In the end, Sweeny tallied 536 total yards, with Erikson throwing for 113 yards. Sweeny had 12 penalties.

With the win, Sweeny ups its record to 4-1, while Hitchcock suffers its first loss of the season and now stands at 4-1. Even better for Sweeny, Friday night’s impressive victory came on the heels of a loss to rival Columbia last week.

“That was a tough loss for us, but I thought we bounced back really well,” Olguin said. “I don’t like to see all the penalties, but sometimes you can’t fault the kids. They are playing hard. But we’re getting better. That’s our goal.”

Although the Bulldogs controlled the game from the start, they pulled away in the second half with 28 points after the break.

Behind two rushing touchdowns from Jones, Sweeny jumped out to a 14-0 lead at the half. Jones then registered his third score of the contest early in the third quarter and the rout was on.

Hitchcock eventually found the end zone early in the fourth stanza, but the deficit had reached 28 points by that time. Hitchcock tacked on one final score in the game’s final minutes.

Also turning in a strong effort, Sweeny’s defense allowed 290 yards, with much of that coming after the game was out of hand.

“It’s nice to see the defense playing well,” Olguin said. “We’ve been stressing that all year. But I really like the fact that the offense looked better. It’s got to be a complete package.”

The Bulldogs next face off against La Marque on Friday in Sweeny.
