A late touchdown and kick-off recovery were not enough for Brazosport to turn around a poor start to Friday night’s game, and the Exporters dropped their third straight game to La Marque, 42-21.

Quarterback Navontae Darthard ran in a 1-yarder with 2:13 left in the game and the Exporters recovered the ensuing kick but couldn’t hold on to it and the Cougars took over on their own 15-yard line.

The game started with turnovers by both teams before the second snap.

The Exporters won the toss but gave up the ball on an onside kick. The Cougars, after a false start penalty, then gave the ball right back on a fumble.

Brazosport capitalized on the turnover, scoring with 7:40 left in the first on a 24-yard touchdown run by Jeremiah Credit, but that would be the Ships’ only lead and only score of the half.

“Jeremiah Credit did an outstanding job and our offensive line did a great job responding to adjustments,” Brazosport head coach Ben Rudolph said.

La Marque scored four touchdowns in the first quarter: a 5-yard run by sophomore running back Demarco Guidry; a 1-yard keeper by junior quarterback Jalen Williams; a 3-yard run by senior running back Ladarrian Ellis-Jones and a 36-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver De’Metrius James.

La Marque kicker Pedro Rubio missed two point-after-attempts on the first two touchdowns, and the Cougars attempted to go for 2 on their third touchdown, but couldn’t convert, making the score 25-7 after the first quarter.

Rubio knocked in his fourth point-after attempt and nabbed a late field goal with two seconds left in the half though, to give La Marque a 28-7 lead at the half.

Ellis-Jones racked up 118 yards on 12 carries before the half and finished with 131 yards.

He stepped up in place of leading rusher Alan Cooper, who was out.

“Ladarrian, he’s our bell cow,” Jackson said. “He left the game kind of nicked up.”

Williams went 2-for-7 for 56 yards with two touchdowns through the air to go with the two he managed on the ground. James caught both touchdown receptions. Williams rushed for a total of 10 yards.

Brazosport quarterback Navontae Darthard had a hard time holding on to the ball before the half, dropping it four times but only losing one fumble.

He did not drop the ball at all in the second half.

“Ball security is something we work on every day,” Rudolph said. “That’s something we’ll continue to stress.”

Junior running back Jeremiah Credit ran in Brazosport’s only first-half touchdown from 24 yards out.

“La Marque is a fine football team,” Rudolph said. “I felt like our kids battled toe for toe with them, and if we can fix our mistakes, we will be so much better.”

Darthard completed four of his seven passing attempts, with two coming in the final minutes to put the Exporters within scoring range. Darthard ran for 74 yards on 19 carries and was the team’s leading rusher.

Brazosport scored on both its second-half possessions, on a pair of 1-yard keepers by Darthard, and held the Cougars to just two TDs in that time.

“Going down for the score and scoring there at the end, getting that on-side kick, was critical,” Rudolph said.

“This is nondistrict play, so it doesn’t keep you in or take you out of the playoffs, so it’s a good time to sharpen your saw on some of those areas,” he said.

Losers of three straight, the Ships’ last non-district game will be next week in Port Lavaca against Calhoun.
