The Wharton Tigers mounted a huge comeback after trailing 24-7 midway through the fourth quarter by scoring three late touchdowns to pull out a 28-24 victory over rival El Campo Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

The victory for the Tigers also ended a 12-game losing streak against El Campo with the last victory coming by a score of 49-21 — also at Tiger Stadium — in 2001.

The comeback started after the Tigers forced the Ricebirds to punt, and the Tigers took over at their own 17.

On the first play of the next drive, Chris Green, filling in at quarterback, picked up 22 yards on the ground to the Tiger 39.

After an incomplete pass, on the next play B.J. Baylor picked up another 40 yards to the Ricebird 21.

Dontre Elliott appered to score on the next play, but the Tigers were flagged for holding, and the Tigers had the ball at the 18.

Four plays later, Green connected with Baylor from 20 yards out for a touchdown.

Guyver Cano added the extra point, cutting the score to 24-14 with 6:37 left in the game.

The Ricebirds moved to the Tiger 46 on their next drive, and on third and 11, D.J. Washington was sacked for a five yard loss. The Ricebirds were forced to punt again, and the Tigers took over at their own 4.

Baylor picked up a yard on the next play to the 5, and after an incomplete pass, Green connected with Ashton Branch for a 95-yard touchdown pass.

Cano added the extra point, making the score 24-21 with only 3:38 left in the game.

El Campo took over at its own 13 on their next drive, and on the next play Kevin Dove picked up six yards to the 19.

Dove had a big run on the next play but was brought back by a holding penalty, leaving the ball at the Ricebird 22.

Dove fumbled the ball on the next play, and the Tigers recovered and took over at the Ricebird 21.

Elliott picked up six yards on the first play to the Ricebird 15, and Baylor added nine yards to the 6 on the next play.

After Elliott lost a yard, Green ran the ball in from 7 yards out for the game-winning touchdown.

Cano added the extra point, making the score 28-24 with 57 seconds left in the game.

The Ricebirds began their ensuing possesion at their own 27, and on the first play Washington connected with Clayton Harp for a big play, but it was brought back because the Ricebirds had an ineligible receiver downfield.

Washington again connected with Harp on the next play for 20 yards, and the the Tigers were flagged for having too many men on the field, moving the ball to the Ricebird 47.

Washington was sacked on the next play for a 7-yard loss, moving the ball back to the 40.

After an incomplete pass, Washington was sacked on the last play to end the game.

In the beginning of the game, the Ricebirds were forced to punt on the opening drive. The Tigers took over at their own 15, but on the next play, the Ricebirds recovered a Tiger fumble.

The Ricebirds were forced to settle for a 28-yard field goal by Cesar Rivera, making the score 3-0 with 6:40 left in the first quarter.

The Tigers took over at their own 26 on their next drive.

Baylor picked up 14 yards on the first play to the Ricebird 40 and wasn’t able to pick up any yards on the next play.

On second and 10, Green connected with Dontay Bell for 25 yards to the Ricebird 35, and the Ricebirds were flagged for a late hit, moving the ball to the 20.

Baylor picked up a yard on the next play, and Elliott added 14 yards to the Ricebird 5.

Elliott added three yards on the next play to the 2, and Baylor ran the ball in on the next play.

Cano added the extar point making the score 7-3 with 3:56 left in the first quarter.

The Ricebirds regained the lead with 8:58 left in the first half on a 32-yard touchdown run by Dove.

Rivera added the extra point making the score 10-7.

Washington connected with Larry Haynes from 29 yards out on the Ricebirds’ next drive for a touchdown. Rivera added the extra point, making the score 17-7 with 6:01 left in the half.

The Tigers drove to the Ricebird 32 on their next drive but turned the ball over on downs.

Washington connected with Harp from 23 yards out for the Ricebirds. Rivera added the extra point, making the score 24-7 with 42 seconds left in the half.

The Tigers now 3-1 on the season travel to Stafford next Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Green completed 13 passes on 24 attempts for 243 yards and two touchdowns.

Branch caught five passes for 125 yards and one touchdown, and Bell caught four passes for 89 yards.

Baylor led the Tigers on the ground with 109 yards on 15 carries, and Elliott added 96 yards on 14 carries.

The Spartans are 3-0 on the season.
