Your name say's it all.

Will the McDonald's in WC be selling the Bulldog being hung from a rope like they did last year? I thought that was a little much.

What about the BOTB T-Shirts? I haven't seen anything on them. Don't think we are selling those this year.

Columbia, Sweeny could be a doozy
Sweeny, Columbia bring identical records, similar teams into tonight’s annual showdown

By BUTCH McREYNOLDS sports@thefacts.com | Posted: Friday, September 19, 2014 2:00 am

WEST COLUMBIA

One thing is for sure: Neither Randy Lynch nor Joseph Olguin had to get on a megaphone this week and tell their team who was next on the schedule.

“I am pretty sure the players and fans have had this one circled well before the season started,” said Olguin, in his first year as Sweeny’s head coach. “This is a huge deal in both communities, something we are all super excited to be involved in.”

The two neighborhood rivals are slated to kick off their 63rd meeting at 7:30 p.m. today at Griggs Field. Columbia holds a 32-29-1 edge in the series, but Roughneck coach Lynch has been involved in the rivalry long enough to know how little records mean when the schools square off.

“There will be a ton of emotion in the stadium,” he said. “The two teams are like family, just about everyone knows each other. And I can tell you for a fact the intensity level will be very high on the field and in the stands.”

The squads come into the shootout with identical 3-0 records, and that is not all they have in common.

Both teams have exhibited strong running games offensively, and both have assembled top-notch, stingy defenses.

“Offensively, Columbia is very strong,” Olguin said. “I will tell you this, tackling that No. 31 (junior fullback Dekarius Bell) is going to be a chore — a really big chore.”

Lynch and company will have some worries of their own against the Bulldogs.

“For us to move the football, we are going to have to figure out a way to block their huge defensive line,” he said. “The Higgins kid (Phillip) is a really good player. He is so athletic and talented.”

Olguin heaped praise on the Columbia defense, which allowed only 40 combined points in the three wins, compared to 38 by the Bulldogs.

“Their defense was so young last year, but man, look at them now,” Olguin said. “They swarm to the ball and tackle very well. Our offense will have its work cut out for it.”

Sweeny’s offense has scored 103 points, and a big reason why is their senior tailback.

“It all starts with their running back, Anthany Simmons,” Lynch said. “Simmons is just a really good back. He can zip by you with his speed, or he can power right up the middle. He will be a huge test for our defense.”

The same is true of the talented Bell, a bulldozer who also has the inside-outside touch.

“Dekarius is finally working himself back into shape,” Lynch said. “He has not played much tailback in the early going as we have moved him to fullback. But he keeps getting better each week, so yes, he is a big weapon for us.”

At 5-foot-9, 220-pounds, Bell has torched enemy lines for 446 yards on 63 carries and a team-high six touchdowns thus far. Simmons isn’t too far behind with 343 yards on 41 carries and a score.

Another strong similarity are the two quarterbacks.

Senior signal-caller Jarius Kesee paces the Roughnecks, while junior Cody Erikson has settled in as the Bulldog leader.

“Both quarterbacks are solid athletes and very similar in style,” Olguin points out. “Both are very athletic and can torment a defense with their legs. And both can pass when called on.”

Erikson has given Simmons a running buddy in the early going, having stepped off 250 yards while passing for 385 yards and five touchdowns against a pair of interceptions.

“Erikson has really stepped up for them this year,” Lynch said. “He is very similar to Kesee. They are both big playmakers.”

Kesee, who is also an outstanding basketball player for the Roughnecks, has scampered for 103 yards and passed for 303 more with a touchdown and interception.

For the first time since 2004, the two squads will not be meeting as district foes. Although both of the friendly neighbors are playing for District 12-4A titles, Columbia is in Division I while the Bulldogs are Division II.

“This not being a district game does not take any of the luster off this get-together,” a smiling Lynch said. “Even though it is not a district game, the final score remains huge. To the winner goes bragging rights for a year.”

Sweeny has had bragging rights since they came up with the big win last year, 34-21.

“You never know in a big rivalry like this,” Olguin said. “But we have been stressing to our team not to get overemotional, to just go out and play the way we are capable. I know it is coach talk, but the team with the fewest turnovers will probably win.”

Lynch gives a hearty amen to that.

“Turnovers can turn a game around so fast,” Lynch said. “We just want the kids to go out and play hard for their school. We want to cut down on our mental mistakes. I don’t think we have to worry about them going out and carrying the Columbia banner.”

Tonight’s game will be broadcast on legacy sportsnetwork.com (http://sportsnetwork.com/).

Columbia wins defensive struggle over rival Sweeny
Columbia defense turns in stifling performance against rival Sweeny

By ANTHONY MAENZA sports@thefacts.com | Posted: Saturday, September 20, 2014 2:00 am

WEST COLUMBIA — A stingy second-half defense and a kicker’s leg were strong enough to lift the Columbia Roughnecks to a 16-6 victory over the Sweeny Bulldogs in their annual rivalry game Friday night.

The Roughneck defense held the Bulldog offense to just 51 yards in the second half and shut them out after giving up their only touchdown early in the first quarter.

“Our defense played extremely well,” Columbia coach Randy Lynch said. “Our kids played to the bitter end. It was a typical Columbia vs. Sweeny football game.”

Opportunities were there for the Sweeny offense throughout the game. The biggest one came in the fourth quarter, after Columbia took a 13-6 lead.

The Bulldogs got the ball at their own 46 with 9:48 left in the game. They drove inside Columbia territory when Columbia’s Zedrik White intercepted a Sweeny pass at the Roughneck 35 with 8:19 left in the game to stop the threat.

“Their defense played well,” Sweeny coach Joey Olguin said. “You have to give them credit. We didn’t take advantage of the opportunities given to us when we had the chance. They are a good team. They played hard.”

Sweeny’s defense had its share of stops as well. When the Columbia offense stalled, Jacob Comer was able to kick field goals from 31, 31 and 39 yards out. The 39-yarder came with 1:53 left in the fourth quarter to put the game on ice.

“Jacob is just a great kid,” Lynch said. “On that last one, he was able to come through for us. He can hit those. He’s done it in practice. He did an exceptional job.”

It was Sweeny (3-1) that jumped out on top with 11:14 left in the first quarter. Derek Davis grabbed a screen pass from quarterback Cody Erickson and ran 85 yards for a touchdown. The play came on a third-and-15 play. The extra-point kick failed, leaving the Bulldogs with a 6-0 lead.

Columbia (4-0) took the lead with 11:54 left in the second quarter when quarterback Jarius Kesee plunged into the end zone from a yard out to cap an 80-yard drive. Comer kicked the extra point to put Columbia up 7-6.

Sweeny’s Nick Logan recovered a Columbia fumble at the Roughneck 49 with 6:10 left in the second quarter to put the Bulldogs’ offense in good field position.

Just over a minute later, Columbia’s Dennis Moody recovered a Sweeny fumble at the Columbia 43 to stop the threat.

The Roughnecks went into Sweeny territory, where Comer kicked his first field goal with 45 seconds left in the first half to put Columbia up 10-6 at that half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Columbia drove as far as the Sweeny 14 early in the fourth quarter before Comer hit his second field goal with 9:56 left in the game to put the Roughnecks up 13-6.

After White picked up his interception, the Roughnecks drove into Sweeny territory where Comer kicked his final field goal of the game.

Columbia’s defense collected three turnovers in the game while Sweeny’s D picked up two turnovers.

The Roughnecks finished with 274 yards of offense. Columbia’s Dakarius Bell had 147 yards rushing on 40 carries. Sweeny had 230 yards of total offense.
