The Wharton Tigers rallied to score 20 points in the second half and held off a last-second drive by Sealy to take a 20-13 victory in a non-district game on Friday night in Sealy.

The win improved Wharton’s record to 2-1 on the season, while Sealy dropped to 1-2 for the year.

Sealy scored first and took a 13-0 lead, but the Wharton Tigers rallied for 20 second-half points, including the go-ahead touchdown with 1:15 left in the game.

Sealy tried a last second field goal, the first attempt was 53 yards out. An offsides penalty, however, gave Sealy another shot and 5 yards closer.

But the 47-yard attempt with five seconds left in the game was blocked, and Antoine Thompson returned it 55 yards for a touchdown as time expired for the final score of the game.

Wharton held on for the victory, their second in a row after losing the season opener.

In the first quarter, Sealy jumped out to a 6-0 lead on a 35-yard touchdown run by D’Andre Cardell. The extra point attempt failed, and that proved to be the difference in the game.

In the second quarter, Sealy’s Holten Einkaus threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to Ben Haase with 10:36 left in the period. This time the kick by Eric Hernandez was good, and Sealy increased its lead to 13-0.

Wharton came out a different team in the second half. In the third quarter, a 68-yard run by Toney Rogers got Wharton down to the Sealy 4-yard line.

Three players later, Tiger quarterback Joseph Krenek scored on a 1-yard run. Guyver Cano added the extra point, and Wharton cut Sealy’s lead to 13-7 with 4:29 left in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Tigers drove late in the game. Krenek threw a 10-yard pass to B.J. Baylor with 1:15 to go. Cano made the all-important extra point to give the Tigers their first lead of the night, 14-13.

Sealy didn’t give up, moving the ball down the field to try the final field goal attempt.

Rogers led the Tigers in rushing with 111 yards on nine carries.

Krenek completed 12 of 15 passes for 59 yards and had no interceptions.

Leading receivers for Wharton were Dontay Bell with three catches for 25 yards and Antoine Thompson with three receptions for 14 yards.

Wharton had 117 yards rushing and 64 yards passing, while Sealy had 103 yards on the ground and 215 yards through the air.

The Tigers return home next week to face their Wharton County rival, the El Campo Ricebirds, in a non-district game at 7:30 p.m. next Friday at Tiger Stadium.

Just talked to a guy from Wharton who was at the game and he said there was a offensive penalty against Wharton after the blocked field goal which would be an offensive foul before the runner had scored. So the score was 14-13. Just got posted wrong on the AP scores that were posted
