The Boling Bulldogs had another big ground attack and held off a pesky Needville team, 43-35, in a non-district game on Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.

The victory keeps the Bulldogs undefeated at 3-0 for the season, while the Blue Jays, although 0-3 on the season, looked much better after last week’s big 85-0 loss to Wharton.

Boling had 503 yards total offense, but most of that came on the ground with 485 yards rushing and 18 passing. Needville was held to 317 yards total — 198 rushing and 119 passing.

In the first quarter, Boling’s Jaylon Tolbert scored on a 5-yard run, and the kick was good for a 7-0 lead with 6:21 to go.

With 3:31 to go, Needville tied it up when Logan Archer threw a 7-yard pass to Caleb Leachman for a 7-7 game.

In the second quarter, the Blue Jays took a 13-7 lead on a Dedrick Ketchum 4-yard run. The kick failed, but Needville led 13-7.

Boling responded with three touchdowns in the quarter to take a 28-13 lead at the half.

Tolbert scored on runs of 2 and 5 yards as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 21-13 lead with 4:27 left.

With 23 seconds remaining, Kade Bickham scored on a 2-yard run, and the PAT was good.

In the third quarter with 3:50 to go, Boling’s Elijah Gooden scored on a 91-yard run. The kick was good, and the Bulldogs had a 35-13 lead.

Late in the period, with 44 seconds left, Needville’s Ketchum scored on a 15-yard run. With the kick, Boling had a 35-20 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Needville rallied to score twice and make it a game.

With 10:57 to go, Needville’s Masen Wheeler scored on a 5-yard pass. The two point conversion was good, and Boling led by only 35-28.

With 1:34 to go, Needville scored on a reverse pass to Logan Archer for 7 yards. The kick was good, and the game was tied, 35-35.

But Boling made it an exciting finish for the home crowd, as Tolbert scored on a 43-yard run with 36 seconds left in the game. A 2-point conversion by Ryan Hererra was good to make the final 43-35 in favor of Boling.

The Bulldogs are back on the road next week when they play at Anderson Shiro at 7:30 p.m. next Friday in another non-district game.
