HOUSTON — The Columbia Roughnecks continued their early-season roll by dominating every aspect of the game in a 69-0 thrashing of the Houston Austin Mustangs on Friday at Delmar Stadium in Houston.

The victory ups the Roughnecks’ record to 3-0, their best start since advancing to the state semifinals in 2011.

Although the teams had never met on the field, it was obvious the Class 5A Mustangs were overmatched by the Class 4A Roughnecks from the start.

Columbia scored 22 first-quarter points, followed by 34 in the second stanza, en route to a 56-0 halftime advantage. The Roughnecks added 13 points in the third quarter.

The final half was played with a running clock. The Roughnecks also used second- and third-stringers, as well as a few JV players, throughout the final two quarters.

“We got to play a lot of kids,” Columbia coach Randy Lynch said. “This was a good opportunity for them, and some of them really stepped up.”

This game belonged to Columbia’s defense, which forced eight turnovers and scored four touchdowns.

The Roughneck defense forced five turnovers in the first two quarters alone, including fumble recoveries by Dennis Moody, Saylaion Dunlap, Justin Pugh and Michael French. Moody and Dunlap scored touchdowns on their fumble recoveries, with Moody’s score coming only a minute into the game. Many of the fumbles came on snaps that sailed over the quarterback’s head.

Jarron Freeman added an interception in the end zone late in the second quarter for another defensive touchdown.

Richard Hopper recovered Columbia’s sixth turnover in the third quarter, as well as scoring the Roughnecks’ fourth defensive touchdown on the play. Nick Solis and Tristen Vasquez also recovered second-half fumbles.

Columbia’s defense didn’t allow a first down and kept Austin’s offense moving backward. For the game, Austin finished with minus-51 yards of offense.

“We created turnovers and got some defensive touchdowns, which is always special,” Lynch said. “Any time you shut out a team, it’s special. It was a great defensive effort.

“I knew going in they were missing some key guys,” Lynch added of Austin. “Their quarterback is a special athlete and he got hurt in their first game. They’re off next week, and they should get him back for their district season. They’ll be a lot better football team with him in there.”

On offense, Columbia fumbled on its first possession of the game, but went on to register touchdowns on every other first-half possession.

Running backs Dakarius Bell and Zedrik White scored two touchdowns each, while Justin Pugh and Dunlap also added offensive scores.

Columbia took Bell and White out of the backfield midway through the second quarter, with White finishing with 57 yards, followed by Bell with 30.

The Roughnecks ended the contest with 200 yards of offense, including 155 rushing yards. Quarterback Jarius Kesee completed five of eight passes for 45 yards.

With the loss, Austin drops to 0-3 on the season.

The Roughnecks return home next week to host rival Sweeny at Griggs Field.

“We stress winning every day — on the field and in the classroom,” Lynch said. “Being 3-0 is special, but now we have to prepare for our rival. We’re no longer district opponents, but it’s still a rivalry game and it means a lot to both communities. I’m sure there will be a packed house at Griggs Field next Friday.”
