BAY CITY — Three negative plays started the night for the Sweeny Bulldogs offense. After that, it was all positives as the Bulldogs moved their record to 3-0 with a 36-12 victory over Bay City on Friday night.

After the slow start for the offense, the Bulldogs compiled 349 total yards.

Quarterback Cody Erikson rushed for 133 yards and three touchdowns, while running back Anthany Simmons picked up 115 yards on the ground.

“Our quarterback had to settle down and make the right reads,” Sweeny head coach Joey Olquin said. “Once he started reading things right, everything started rolling our way.”

Sweeny’s defense had another big night, as it held the Blackcats to 193 total yards and forced two turnovers.

“They were just relentless in attacking the football,” Olquin said. “Coach Ron Stewart and the rest of the defensive coaches had them flying to the ball, and you can’t ask for anything more.”

Erikson scored the first of his three touchdowns with 7:16 left in the second quarter on a 22-yard run to cap an 89-yard drive. Simmons ran in the two-point conversion to put Sweeny up 8-0.

After a Simmons punt return to the Bay City 30, Erikson took the ball into the end zone with 1:12 left in the first half. Clayton Gilbert scored the two-point conversion to put the Bulldogs up 16-0 at halftime.

A 3-yard Bay City punt set up the next Sweeny score. Charlie Jones finished off a 59-yard drive for the Bulldogs with an 18-yard touchdown run with 7:57 left in the third quarter. Gilbert scored his second two-point conversion on a pass from Erikson to put Sweeny up 24-0.

Erikson scored his third touchdown on a 6-yard run to finish off a 51-yard drive with 4:17 left in the third quarter to increase the Bulldogs lead to 30-0.

Bay City got on the scoreboard with 3:09 left in the third quarter when Zavien Gartica scored on a 58-yard run. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the Blackcats down 30-6.

Sweeny put its final points on the scoreboard with 11:52 left in the fourth quarter when Derek Davis scored on a five-yard sweep. The play was set up by a fumble recovery by D’Adrian Higgins at the Bay City 6-yard line.

Bay City scored their final touchdown with six seconds left in the game when Gartica scored on a 5-yard run.

The Bulldogs and rival Columbia will put their identical 3-0 records on the line next Friday in a nondistrict contest at Bulldog Stadium.
