SWEENY — With archrival Columbia only a week away, it is easy to see why Sweeny coach Joseph Olguin may be harping on his Bulldogs about being complacent Friday in Bay City.

“Bay City is 0-2,” Olguin said. “But I will guarantee you that they have some good skilled people who can burn you. We have been talking to our kids about how dangerous a team like this can be. We cannot afford a letdown.”

The Bulldogs have been impressive thus far, pounding down on Brazosport, 35-14, last week after opening the season with a 32-12 pasting of Van Vleck.

“The kids have played real hard the first two games, no doubt,” Olguin said. “We have made a few mistakes on both sides of the ball, but nothing that isn’t correctable. We have a chance to win another football game, so I don’t think there will be a letdown.”

The Blackcats have found the going rough in their first two outings of the season, losing to Houston Kincaid, 42-14, and then to Columbus, 20-0. Last week against Kincaid, blue-chip Rice commit J.T. Granado pierced the Blackcats for 225 yards passing with 17 completions on 24 attempts, including a pair of touchdowns.

While Olguin said the Bulldog passing game remains a “work in progress,” he believes his offense is coming around, especially with Anthany Simmons and the run game.

“Anthany really had a good game against Brazosport,” Olguin said. “He is just a natural runner. He runs hard and he runs fast. His legs never stop churning.”

Simmons pranced and danced through the Brazosport defense for a game-high 163 yards on 20 carries, including a 12-yard touchdown trot with 1:23 left in the contest.

The Bulldog passing game showed some life as well, accounting for 117 yards and three touchdowns on the evening.

“Our passing game is coming along,” Olguin said. “It was really good to see Clayton Gilbert come up with those three touchdown catches. We missed a few passes, dropped a few, but overall I think we are getting better each time out.”

With quarterback Cody Erikson chunking the passes, Gilbert latched onto scoring tosses of 13, 5 and 9 yards in the road victory.

“Cody is coming along just fine,” Olguin said. “The good thing is that he is going to continue to get better. Right now it is obvious that he is very comfortable throwing to Gilbert. He will gain confidence every week.”

Erikson finished 10-of-20 passing with one interception, including six hookups for 59 yards with Gilbert. Erikson also slipped through the Exporters for 52 yards rushing on nine carries.

While the Sweeny offense melted the Exporters for 338 total yards, the Bulldog defense continued on its early season stingy binge, allowing only 80 total yards for the game.

Brazosport scored its touchdowns on a nifty 85-yard kickoff return by Jeremiah Credit and a 23-yard fumble scoop and score by Jahcyi Thomas.

“We could not have asked any more of our defense,” Olguin said. “It was a total team effort. Dax McCleary (linebacker) had an outstanding game with nine unassisted tackles and two assists. He was all over the field.”

Olguin also pointed to defensive end Da’Adrian Higgins for his play. Higgins used his big paw to swipe a Brazosport pass away then raced 47 yards for a Bulldog score.

“We need to continue to play good, solid defense,” Olguin said. “And we need to correct our specialty teams mistakes from last week and we will be all right. The main thing is that we cannot have a letdown because Bay City has lost two games. They have played both of their games on the road, and I have a feeling they will be ready for their first home game.”

The Bulldogs and Blackcats have met 12 times, with each team getting six wins. Sweeny has won four consecutive games and will be looking to go on top of the series after Friday night.
