Finally time for a home game!! Hooray!! I know it's only week 3 but it seems like we have been waiting forever!!

Graham/Wylie games are always intense. Last year it was a 7 point game at half and then the Steers put it on the Dawgs in the second half. I'm thinking this year it will be reversed. Yep, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!!

Add 7-14 pts to yours, and I agree. Yep, Wylie by 14-21 pts. Steers are nowhere near last seasons team.

I agree more with slingshot. But down more than a smidge. Graham will be much better in 4-5 weeks. They have some inexperience that will only get better as the season plays out.

No way Graham beats Wylie in their house in their season opener. Not this season.

Wylie is much improved from last season, healthy and more experienced.

Graham is a bit weaker from last season, a little banged up and less experienced.

Don't get your feelers hurt. ;) I'm sure the players, coaches and fans are ready for a battle. I'm sure the team will give it all they've got. That's expected and epecially from a great program like Graham's.

Let me put it in less evasive words Rabid... it's going to be a challenge for Graham to come out on top against a strong Wylie team this Friday playing at Wylie. Graham has a solid team this season. Y'all will need to play a mistake free game to have the best chance.

Speaking of 7th grade football... Stephenville's 7th grade had their first scrimmage tonight. The first touchdown scored on the B team was a player I've coached for the past 4 years, in soccer. She ran 70 yards for the first score and broke 2 tackles to do it! She's a helluva soccer player too.

The running back is that is hurt is a Junior and he will be back. We are blessed this year the have 3 running backs, all of which are doing very good. Each has their own style of running.
Freeze will be attending TCU in January. He does have a bright future before him.

Both teams have talent and great coaching staffs. Both teams have a very quality football program that requires much from all involved to compete at a high level year in and year out. I have not seen Graham play this season...I'm sure they are very athletic as usual. I'm just very impressed with the overall team size & strength of Wylie this season. Beyond that....they have tons of talent on that team just "sittin' there" waiting to explode into a team unlike any before it. That's just my opinion from an outsider that does NOT know the intimate history of Wylie football. But I know what I saw on the field, and I saw lots of athletes with tons of potential. This team may lose a game or two it should win....but by the end of district play they will be super-formidable...just sayin'. Personally, I don't think they'll lose another game until they run into a Stephenville, and they may win that one. Nothing against Graham....just get ready.

Wylie by 17+

No way Graham beats Wylie in their house in their season opener. Not this season.

Wylie is much improved from last season, healthy and more experienced.

Graham is a bit weaker from last season, a little banged up and less experienced.

What!!!

Abilene High (6A) would stomp you by 4 TD's or more... we'll only beat you by 2.

Don't think so scooter

Serious note. AW is stout and will just get better as will the Steers...beating this team in their own house was big for the Graham boys tonight ...they played hard and got the W.. congrats Steers

It could have been pretty ugly if our offense had been firing on all cylinders in the first half with the way our D was playing but they came out in the second half and the O turned it on and the D stayed strong and pulled it off.

Awesome, proved me wrong! Keep improving each week! Both Wylie and Graham are great football programs. I missed a good one!

Decided to go watch Stephenville play a very good Everman team. Man oh man, Everman got speed speed speed! They always do. If anyone is familiar with Everman teams, you know they are always big, physical and speed in every position.

Again, congrats to Graham on a solid win against Wylie. Looking forward to seeing Wylie in district and a possible Ville/Graham playoff meeting!

Defense carries Steers in win over Wylie

As the pocket collapsed around Abilene-Wylie quarterback J.T. Ward late in the third quarter, he threw the ball up trying to get something going on offense.

After all, the Bulldogs needed something, anything, to get back in the game. They had managed just three first downs and 42 yards of offense to that point.

Instead, Graham defensive end Dustin McWhorter got his hands up and snagged the ball.

Two plays later, the Steers converted the turnover into the game's final score, an 8-yard touchdown run by Hagan Hughes and an 18-7 win.

McWhorter's interception punctuated a dominant performance by the Steers' defense. On a night where a heavy mist and blowing wind slowed down Graham's offensive attack, the defense did exactly what it needed to do.

“I told the guys at halftime, there's certain nights the defense is gonna have to carry you, there's certain nights the offense is gonna have to carry you,” defensive coordinator Clay McChristian said. “It just happened to be our night. Our kids rose up and took care of our side of the ball.”

Wylie running back Trey Kleffner, who had 476 yards and six touchdowns in two games coming into Friday, scored on a 9-yard run midway through the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.

Then the Steers shut down Kleffner, who had 24 yards on 10 carries, and the entire Bulldog offense. Wylie finished with three first downs, 27 passing yards and 35 rushing yards.

“We perfected the game plan that coach Mac gave us,” cornerback Landon Gonzales said. “We talked about it the whole week. If we're in the right spot, we're gonna win. They can't stop us.”

With the mist keeping the ball wet, the Steers' offense didn't have their usual balanced attack, relying heavily on the run game. In fact, the Steers had nine straight run plays on their third drive and racked up 63 rushing yards in the first quarter.

Anytime the Steers went to the air in the first half, something seemed to go wrong. The Wylie defense sacked quarterback Landry Turner three times and dropped three potential interceptions. Graham also had five false start penalties.

Graham's front three is ridiculous. They dominated the trenches and disrupted our offense all night. Turnovers (5) killed us again... and yes, Graham had a lot to do with that. Good luck to the Steers and if you end up playing Stephenville in the regional finals I will be there. You might just have the defense to beat them.

I may have agreed somewhat with slingshot prior to last night but after seeing what Stephenville was able to do against Everman, any team in 4A and many in 5A would have an extreme challenge stopping the Stephenville offense. You thought last years was pretty good, so many more weapons this season at WR, RB bigger stronger and faster, and Stidham is just flat out stellar. OL isn't the biggest the jackets have had, but plenty big and GOOD! On defense, one of the best NG's in Reg 1, 2'really good DE's and the LB's are the best they've had in several seasons. *I can't leave out the secondary. Several stepped up this season and have done a great job. The Ville is for real folks. It would be a great game no doubt, just looking forward to the opportunity.

Honest question. What's the story on Wylie's offense? Inconsistent miscues? Has a QB been identified?

They have a excellent offense, the Steers defense was just too much. It's early with improvement still to be made on the defense so if and when they meet the jackets, they'll bring it. Don't take my word for it though, the doubt motivates this team so please, keep doubting.

Not doubting Graham, every team in the state needs work to get better. Like Garciap77 said, both teams need some work. Just keep getting better and see what happens. Reg 1 is stout this year. Graham has a great coaching staff and program. Back to work this week for Argyle. Wish Graham all the best. Should be another great game.

As far as offenses, who's stronger, Brownwood or Wylie?

Wylie has the potential just needs to pick a QB and throw support all over him!! A good back up is a must but it should be just that a backup!! They will be fine, and I'd have to go with Wylie !!

Brownwood offense is better. They have more leadership at QB.

Potential is an under estimation... It will be a slobber knocker! Good luck to both. Rematch of last years qtr finals! Steers come in with something to prove! Eagles are defending champs and have want to prove they are still a contender for 2014. Doesn't get much better than this!
