FREEPORT — The Sweeny Bulldogs survived the red tide and pulled away late in the second half to best the Brazosport Exporters, 35-14, at Hopper Field, keeping them undefeated through the first two games.

The Bulldog defense held Brazosport to just 80 total yards on the night, while the offense couldn’t be stopped in the air or on the ground. Sweeny put up 221 rushing yards and totaled 338 altogether.

A messy fourth-quarter play almost cost Sweeny after a bad snap sailed over the quarterback’s head, traveled 23 yards back into the end zone and Brazosport’s Jahcyi Thomas fell on it for a touchdown.

The defensive score put Brazosport within two touchdowns with time on the clock, but Sweeny’s Anthany Simmons rushed six straight times for 55 yards to put the game out of reach at 35-14 with 1:23 left to play.

Simmons plowed over the offense on his 20 rushes, only having two recorded for a loss. He totaled 163 yards on the night, with all but 31 coming in the second half. Simmons’ yards were 48 percent of the offense’s total yardage.

The night started with festivities as the game was the home-opener for Brazosport and the school’s annual Red Tide Game. The school honored Freeport, Jones Creek and Oyster Creek first-responders, as well as military personnel, before the game as the Brazoria County Cavalry, which supports the county’s military, circled the track on motorcycles.

Brazosport won the toss but elected to defer, giving Sweeny the opportunity to strike first. Junior quarterback Cody Erikson connected with junior wide receiver Clayton Gilbert on a 13-yard pass with 7:28 left in the first.

Erikson completed 50 percent of his passes for 117 yards through the air. Gilbert hauled in 59 of those yards.

The duo was responsible for three of the team’s four offensive touchdowns.

Both teams had trouble establishing a rhythm as fumbles and fumbled snaps plagued the offenses. Brazosport dropped the ball 10 times but only gave up three possessions and Sweeny lost two of its four fumbles.

Penalties were also a problem for teams. Sweeny gave up 80 yards on nine penalties, and Brazosport lost 65 yards on seven yellow flags.

Exporter junior running back Jeremiah Credit rushed six times in the game and only managed one touchdown, compared to his two in the first half last week.

He kept the defense alert though, after returning a Sweeny kick-off 85 yards for a touchdown. Credit caught the ball at the 15-yard line and shook several defenders to break free around the 50-yard line with 46 seconds on the clock in the first half.

Brazosport senior quarterback Jody Virgil struggled to find any kind of rhythm throwing the ball, going 1 for 5 with an interception.

Virgil tried to shake defenders and toss the ball to an open player down the right side, but senior defensive lineman D’Adrian Higgins read the pass and stepped in its path. He hauled it in and raced 47 yards to the end zone in the fourth to put Sweeny up, 28-7.

Sweeny will travel to Bay City next week in the hopes of continuing their winning streak, and Brazosport will look to rebound against Baytown Sterling.
