WEST COLUMBIA — Fresh off a big win, the Columbia Roughnecks hit the road to Liberty today to face the Panthers in a non district contest.
Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium.
Last week, the ‘Necks (1-0) opened their season with a come-from-behind victory over previously No. 1 ranked Halletsville (31-20) from Class 3A.
Now the Roughnecks switch their attention to a tough Liberty squad.
“I mean that was all well and good but that is over with,” Columbia coach Randy Lynch said about the big win. “Now it is this week and time to switch gears a bit and concentrate on this team here.”
With a little more than 350 yards of offense against the Brahmas, the Roughnecks scored 22 points in the second half.
“We did have a bit of a slow start, but we got it going in the second half,” Lynch said.
Trailing 14-2 at one point, Columbia went on a 29-0 run with the running of junior Dakarius Bell (28-114 yards) and quarterback Jarius Kesee (19-75). Kesee also had a good night throwing the ball, 7-19-1, 140 yards as Bell saw the back of the end zone three times.
Columbia’s defense only gave up 258 total yards to Halletsville and really buckled down in the second half. Junior defensive lineman Austin Martinez put the icing on the win with a 25-yard fumble recovered touchdown with 7:39 left in the fourth period.
Liberty (0-1) went down to Anahuac 13-10 on the road, as they debuted some players in key positions. Darien Mallett (6-foot-3, 180) took over the reins under center for the Class 9-4A Division II team. Mallett threw his first touchdown pass when he hooked up with Lagarious McQuirter (6-foot-1, 170) to put Liberty up 10-7 in the third period.
But the Panthers could not hold on.
