I will be traveling to Gatesville this Friday for the Gatesville/Stephenville game and I need some help with recommendations for a good meal.

Junction on 36 has an awesome jalepeno burger and nice atmosphere

I ate at a Mexican food place there a few years ago that was really good. It was on 84 on the west edge of town. I think it was El Tapatio. Looking online it appears they may have moved to a new location?

Ranchers Steak house on the left as you come into town. Good salad bar, good food, good prices. We ate there after the 7 on 7 tournament this summer.

You cannot beat The Stockyard Steakhouse. Intersection of Business TX 36 and US 84 about a 1/2 mile west of the football field. ‎

The Stockyard is closed, it's now a Stripes. El Tap is good and they have two locations, both on 84 one in town and one by the hospital on the west side. Close to the stadium there is Ranchers (84 and 36 Loop), Studebakers, J&M's BBQ, and Black Meg 43. There are several fast food joints and few other restaurants in town.

Speaking of places to eat in Gatesville... J&M's BBQ is rated top with the Black Meg 43 behind that. Ranchers is OK but has a good salad bar. This comes from someone who's from there.

J&M's is suppose to have a great stuffed baked potato... BBQ brisket, Fried Catfish and Chicken Fried Steak are the favorites.

Chopped brisket sandwich on a jalapeno sour dough bun is the best thing there, everything else is meh.

Not sure about the food but you better get there early as the visitors side is tiny.

Not the same. George W. likes to eat there when he's at the ranch. Pretty cool standing in the buffet line next to him. The owner does/did a lot of catering for him.

I gave J&M's a try since it was close to the stadium and I must say the Chicken fried steak was very yummy! Friend of mine had the fried pork chop and he said it was outstanding.

That's good to hear. I'll have to remember that the next time I'm there. Like I said, it was just passed along to me from someone who's from there.
