I'm taking Hallettsville by 14, but if Columbia is vastly improved this could be a close game or even one the Necks could take. I'm really looking forward to a report from this one.

Updates?!!

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 07:42 PM
Necks get one first down and are first to punt. Brahmas very first play is qb keeper up the middle where he got popped and fumbled. Ball pops into the air into a HV players hands right in stride and he runs it 50 yds for a TD....

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 07:48 PM
Necks offensive line is getting manhandled by the HV defense.

RBs getting hit as soon as they get the ball. Forced a 3rd and long where kesee throws an int. Returned to columbia 24 yd line.... 1st down brahmas

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 07:50 PM
5 yd loss and a penalty drive HV backwards. on 3rd and long, qb gets nailed.... Pass hardly makes back into the line but somehow RB catches it with one hand. Brings up 4th and 11 at the 25

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 07:52 PM
Brahmas try a double reverse and the necks eat it up in the backfield. Columbia ball at 28

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 07:56 PM
Necks get a nice first down but screw it up with a mishandled snap the following 3rd down.... At least the 4th botched snap already...

Crappy punt. Brahmas ball at their own 40

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 08:00 PM
HV 3 and out. Holding penalty on the punt and rekick. Good kick but an even better return, necks ball at own 40.

End of 1. 7-0 brahmas. Defensive game, crazy TD is the only difference thus far. Brahma d is good but necks killing themselves w/ mishandled snaps

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 08:08 PM
Qb throws a perfect pass on 3rd down to a wide open WR which would have put Columbia DEEP in brahma territory if not a TD but he drops it....

Necks punt. Brahmas ball on their own 8

Necks mishandle ANOTHER snap... 5 yd loss.

Saggy Aggie

Very next play is ANOTHER botched snap. Brahmas recover this time. 1st down on their own 25. We need to go to shotgun.... This is awful

Come on boys hang on to the ball!!!

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 08:21 PM
#3 for the brahmas makes a huge play... They've got a major mismatch on the DB... Brahmas down to columbia 10 on a 65 yd catch and run

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 08:24 PM
Brahmas run it in... 5:22 to go til half. HV up 14-2

Too much running sideways for WC... Trying to get cute and this crap is not working at all....

Necks go 3 and out. Crappy punt. Brahmas ball on WC 48. 3:45 to go

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 08:31 PM
Brahmas go 3 and out. Try a fake punt and necks blow it up in the backfield. Necks ball on brahmas 48

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 08:36 PM
Necks get a delay penalty... Stupid mistakes....

That said, nice pass next play to brahma 30.

Holding penalty next play.... Dear lord this ugly on offense. Bell nice run....

Seems like everytime we make a nice play, we follow it up with a mistake. If we can just clean it up, we're moving it pretty well.

Saggy Aggie

Necks driving deep in brahma territory, clock winding down

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 08:40 PM
3rd and goal on the 2. Timeout, 57 seconds left. I would've let the clock tick for another 20 seconds or so before I called that TO, but that's just me...

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 08:41 PM
Bell runs over a defender on the goalline on the pitch and scores a TD. EP good. 14-9 brahmas. 53 seconds to go.

14-9 brahmas at half. They'll get the ball to start the 2nd half

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 09:19 PM
Brahmas run it out to the 27. 1st down run to the 40.

Necks d holds after that. On 3rd down the brahma qb is absolutely leveled by #48 for the necks. Punt down to columbia 23

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 09:23 PM
Bell delivers a punishing blow to #12 after a nice run. Dude had to find himself after that.

Next run, bell busts a huge gain down to brahma 22

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 09:24 PM
Kesee breaks a long run on 3rd and long and columbia has a 1st down at the brahma 8

5 yd gain to the 3. Bell stuffed on 2nd down. Holding penalty on 3rd down.... Smh. Pass incomplete on 3rd down. Fg unit on. 30 yd try is no good. Brahmas ball at their own 20

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 09:39 PM
Kesee gets nailed as he throws on 2nd and long. Pass almost intercepted.

Long pass complete on 3rd and a mile. 1st down at the brahma 9

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 09:40 PM
Kesee throws a perfect pass on the run in the back of the endzone. Hits the receiver in the facemask.... Incomplete....

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 09:42 PM
Bell runs up through the middle untouched and bulldozes the safety with a full head of steam on the goalline for a TD....

2 pt conversion good.

Roughnecks 17
Brahmas 14
1:30 to go in the 3rd

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 09:45 PM
Brahmas return the kick to the 26. 1st down.

22 yd run on 1st down is brought back b/c of a holding.

On 2nd and 5, brahma qb is sacked for a huge loss back to the 19. 3rd and 17. End of the 3rd. 17-14 necks

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 09:52 PM
Necks hold. 4th and 13. Brahmas punt to columbia 45. Buncha controversy. Brahmas believe a Columbia player touched the ball on the bounce but refs rule otherwise. I couldn't tell, it was very close. Necks ball.

On 1st down, kesee with the long pass to bell down to brahmas 30.

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 09:57 PM
Necks with a couple more nice runs to the brahma 16. 1st down. Whole team (especially offensive line) playing much better in the 2nd half. Nice halftime adjustments coaches. Kudos.

Necks w/ another 1st down run inside the 5. Necks fumble on the 1, but recover.... At least the 6th or 7th fumble for the necks.

2nd and goal on the goalline and no gain.

3rd and goal... Please just give it to Dakarius... I'm tired of qb draws...

They give it to Dakarius on 3rd and goal and...... TD. Necks get called for an unsportsmanlike conduct after the TD... Dumb mistake and will hurt us field position wise on the kickoff. EP good. 24-14 necks. 7:55 to go in the 4th

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 10:05 PM
Very nice kickoff considering the penalty. Brahma ball at own 25.

On first down they run a jet sweep and the WR fumbles the handoff. #53 for the necks scoops it and scores. 31-14 columbia... 7:39 to go. Wow.

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 10:08 PM
Very first play the next drive is nearly a pick6 for the necks. Brandon Harris jumped the route and it hit him right in the hands with a full head of steam... He dropped it though....

Big run followed by a nice pass. Brahmas at columbia 23. 2 plays later, 20 yd TD run...

31-20 necks. 6:04 left brahmas try for 2 and the qb is nailed by #15 of the necks back at the 5. No good.

Pooch kick. Kesee returns it to the 42 where he gets popped

4th down and 11. Timeout HV.

Offsides on the D. 4th and 6. Timeout Columbia. 2:16 to go. I expect a fg try here

And instead we roll out and throw a pass. Not a good pass and the WR can't hang on. Brahmas ball on own 18.

They run it out to the 36 on 1st down

Saggy Aggie
08-29-2014, 10:28 PM
Short run, incomplete swing pass, long ball almost intercepted. 4th and long on their own 39

On 4th down, #44 sacks the qb again. At least his 2nd sack.

Necks ball. Should be able to run it out.

D played a hell of a game. Offensive had it's moments. Plenty to work on and a nice win against a good halletsville team. Way to go necks!

31-20 final. Liberty up next

HV is for real. We will have our hands full. As always against our neighbors 17 miles away. Wonder how much losing their QB to Goliad effected? 111 passing yards, I'd say somewhat. But WC, is solid. Nice win WC.

O'yeah. H'ville nothing to be a shame of here. They have a brutal schedule. WC no gimme. It will take this new signal caller a few games to get in step. Well coached and they will not hang theirs heads against a descent Columbia club.

WEST COLUMBIA — Columbia coach Randy Lynch said defense was going to have to carry the load early in the 2014 season as the offense developed.

They didn’t disappoint Friday night as the Roughnecks dominated Class 3A’s No. 1 team Hallettsville in the second half en route to a 31-20 season-opening win.

“The defense played exceptionally,” Lynch said. “(Defensive coordinator Chris) Gerbich and the defensive coaches did an outstanding job preparing them for this game.”

Columbia allowed 258 total yards for the contest, but Hallettsville gained only 104 in the second half. The majority of those second-half yards came on two plays on their final touchdown drive of the game.

Meanwhile, the Columbia offense came to life in the final two quarters. The Roughnecks gained 351 total yards, and 224 of those came in the second half.

Running back Dakarius Bell rushed for 114 yards on 28 carries and three touchdowns as he put on a dominating performance in the third and fourth quarters.

“They were stacking the box against us, so we decided to spread them out,” Lynch said. “We were able to throw the ball a little against them.”

Quarterback Jarius Kesee passed for 140 yards and also rushed for 75.

The Roughnecks trailed 14-9 at the half, and they didn’t take the lead until there was 1:30 left in third quarter. Bell capped a 52-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run, then scored the two-point conversion to put Columbia up 17-14.

Kesee completed an 11-yard pass to Jarron Freeman and a 29-yard pass to Kalen Williams to help keep the drive moving.

Columbia then mounted a 55-yard drive that Bell finished off with a 2-yard touchdown run with 7:55 left in the game. Jacob Comer’s extra point put Columbia up 24-14.

On Hallettsville’s next possession, Columbia defensive lineman Austin Martinez scooped up a Brahma fumble and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown with 7:39 left in the game. It was the third fumble recovered by the Columbia defense in the contest.

Things weren’t going so well in the first half for the Roughnecks.

They lost the ball on the first snap of the game at their own 26. Columbia’s Zedrik White recovered a Halletsville fumble at the 16 to end the threat.

The Brahmas scored first with 7:40 left in the first quarter on a freak play. Quarterback Brent Motal fumbled on a run, but the ball was caught in the air by teammate Brannen Caraway, who raced 45 yards for a touchdown.

Columbia’s first score came with 8:34 in the second quarter when the Roughneck defense caught Motal in the end zone for a safety.

After Kaden Hardt scored on a 5-yard run to put Hallettsville up 14-2 with 5:22 left in the first half, Columbia’s offense finally mounted a scoring drive.

Bell capped the 52-yard march with a 3-yard touchdown run with 53 seconds remaining in the half to leave Roughnecks trailing 14-9 at halftime.

Columbia continues nondistrict play next Friday at Liberty. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

So HV not as good as expected, or columbia a contender?

WC beat the #1 ranked 3A school by 2 scores in an ugly game.

Lots of turnovers and penalties for both teams.

I'm not sold yet on the Oline, they looked bad early on but played much better as the game progressed. This is a completely new line so it may take a while for them to figure it out. Have to wait and see.
Bell got his yards & TD's, but they were hard yards as he was carrying a defender or two on most every play. If the Oline can make some holes for him Bell will start tearing it up again.
Kesee looks a lot like last year, one pass looks great, then the next is 10 feet too high. I counted 3 missed TD passes, all wide open. 2 were bad throws & 1 drop, actually hit the WR in the face. He picked up 140 yards but should have had a lot more.
Kicking game looks good. FG had the distance from 35 yards out, but just wide. Range up to 45 I figure. Kickoffs are deep with good hang time. Punts looked good too, though they tend to bounce backwards.
Defense looked good. Dline got sacks, LBs got sacks. Stuffed the run. Even the DB's, though overmatched, made plays. Finley was a monster at LB. Moody & French ruled from the DE positions.
Take out that fluky TD & the late game TD & HV really didn't do much of anything.
Need to work on snaps & holding calls, but overall a good start to the season...

I'll address each of your comments in the quote below

I'm not sold yet on the Oline, they looked bad early on but played much better as the game progressed. This is a completely new line so it may take a while for them to figure it out. Have to wait and see.

Agreed. But im encouraged based on what I saw on game. It was night and day.

Bell got his yards & TD's, but they were hard yards as he was carrying a defender or two on most every play. If the Oline can make some holes for him Bell will start tearing it up again.

Agreed, but look for Goins, white & Harris to get carries too. Think Dakarius and Maleek will be the primary options. Big bruiser and the shifty quick runningback.

Kesee looks a lot like last year, one pass looks great, then the next is 10 feet too high. I counted 3 missed TD passes, all wide open. 2 were bad throws & 1 drop, actually hit the WR in the face. He picked up 140 yards but should have had a lot more.

By my count, 2 were drops. The one in the facemask in the back of the endzone and the one #11 just thought about running before he brought it in. The bootleg throw on 4th down would've been a TD but that one was thrown low. Kesee would like to have that one back. I think o line just needs to give kesee a little more time. He looked antsy as he had dlinemen all around him for most of the first half. I wanna see less qb draws though. Kesee is okay runner, but he's too valuable passing to risk getting hurt especially when we have a stable of RBs.

Kicking game looks good. FG had the distance from 35 yards out, but just wide. Range up to 45 I figure.

I'm not concerned about EPs, but the FG kicking leaves something to be desired. I don't want a game to come down to a fg for us...

Kickoffs are deep with good hang time.

Agreed. Kickoffs look great, and the coverage was borderline excellent.

Punts looked good too, though they tend to bounce backwards.

I'll disagree here. To me, for a punt to be good, it cannot bounce backward. I don't care how high the ball goes, if you only net 25/30 yds, that's a very mediocre punt. We need a little more drive on the punt and a decent bounce. This could use some work.

Defense looked good. Dline got sacks, LBs got sacks. Stuffed the run.

Agreed, I was very pleased with the improvement of the front seven against a solid HV offense.

Even the DB's, though overmatched, made plays.

We had a top cb sitting on the sidelines waiting for UIL approval. If he gets accepted, we will improve drastically in the secondary.

Finley was a monster at LB. Moody & French ruled from the DE positions.
Take out that fluky TD & the late game TD & HV really didn't do much of anything.

Agreed, WC handled the game overall. Very impressed with the guys you mentioned along with a few others.

Need to work on snaps & holding calls, but overall a good start to the season...

Agreed, snaps needs a LOT of work, but still managed to get a convincing win against a good team. Plenty to work on but a great start. No one expects perfection the first week but I'm encouraged. I think we've got a shot to do some good things this year.

"We had a top cb sitting on the sidelines waiting for UIL approval. If he gets accepted, we will improve drastically in the secondary. "

I heard that there was a LaMarque transfer on the sidelines, perhaps that was the one you're hearing about, if its true. I'm wary of stands based rumors...

WEST COLUMBIA — the Roughnecks dominated Class 3A’s No. 1 team Hallettsville

All due respect, not sure a 11 point win is dominating the opponent. Nice win though.

Saggy Aggie

I wouldn't call it domination, but it was 31-14 at one point with WC playing pretty poorly and one of HV's TDs coming as a straight up fluke.

The stats show that WC had a pretty significant margin in most every category. I think WC is 2/3 tds better than HV with maybe their best player on the sidelines but that's just my opinion.

Now, would you say Hallettsville is #1 material in 3A DI or not? QB play was going to be big for them since their starter moved on the Goliad. I personally had them as my pre-season #1, but I knew that they would have to get good play from that position to be up there.

After seeing them, I do not think think they are 3A #1 material. They are good, but the qb position is solid but not nearly what it was.

They have some good players, especially #3 at WR and on defense.

I don't think many 3A teams will score too much on them, but they will give up a few points & they won't be able to keep up offensively with the best of 3A.

I think they're top 10-15 in 3A, but I think WC is a sleeper in 4A. I think WC should be ranked at least in the top 25 in 4a. You could make a case for 15-20ish based on their returning players
