New coach for Seminole bringing new offensive method

By PHIL TERRIGNO
A-J MEDIA HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS EDITOR

The era of plodding Indian offenses loaded with two tight ends and a running back is over at Seminole, replaced by first-year head coach Kent Jackson with a no-huddle attack making use of lithe playmakers.

“It’s something that had evolved at Coronado,” Jackson said, referencing the team he coached for the past three seasons. “Not huddling, I think a lot of that is just the way the game has evolved the past few years. And with the 40-second play clock, it’s a tempo game. We feel like it’s easier for us to communicate (with the no-huddle). We get more done in a more efficient manner.”

Quarterback Jarrett Johnson, who tallied 675 yards and four touchdowns last season, returns as the starter and is tasked with identifying how the defense sets up, getting the call from the sideline and doling out blocking assignments for the offensive line.

“Last year, what we ran was pretty much the complete opposite,” Johnson said. “The change has been great. Our team is made for no-huddle more than ground-and-pound. All of the skill guys — Sebraun (Adams), Jarryd (Karr), Justin (Hernandez) — they are all fast and agile. Give them the ball and they make special things happen.”

Jackson’s team has taken an increased number of reps while working at a faster pace in practice, a technique to keep more players engaged and bring everyone up to speed with new terminology.

“The jargon and terminology and communication signals will come,” Jackson said. “Anytime there’s a transition, that’s the biggest deal when you can get to a point where everybody speaks the same way.”

Offensive lineman Kyle Rickman, who switched from noseguard to defensive end on defense, will line up with Jaxon Williams and Brant Addision in the 4-3 scheme, which can switch from an odd to an even front.

“We’re putting the big guys on the end and we’re just trying to create as much havoc as we can,” Rickman said. “Our goal is to get the ball and take whoever has got it down. We’re not focused on sacrificing one guy to draw blocks. It’s ‘go in there and get the ball.’

Seminole will face new district opponents Pampa and Borger in 1-4A DI this year — in Johnson’s words, “all we know is that we have to go a long way to play them” — in addition to familiar opponents Estacado and Levelland.

“We have the music going at practice,” Johnson said. “We’ve got something going that we haven’t had. There’s an energy at practice and people are having a good time. More people are coming out for football. (Jackson is) a coach you want to play for really bad.”
