COLUMBIA
COACH: Katy Scarborough (first year)
LAST YEAR’S RECORDS: District 24-3A 7-3, 11-20 overall
RETURNING LETTERMEN: Kaela McReynolds, senior, S; Tiera Thomas, junior, MB; Laci Hambalek, junior, OH; Celeste Loughman, junior, OH; Chantel Ward, junior, S/OH and Sabrina Fogle, sophomore, L
STRENGTHS: With back-to-back playoff appearances, the Lady ‘Necks want to continue the streak.
Thomas was a first team, all-district performer last year with Loughman making the second team.
McReynolds, Ward, Hambalek and Fogle all saw quality time on the court in their playoff run.
NEWCOMERS: Four freshmen will join the team this season and all should make some contributions.
They are Taylor Murphy, Chrissa Manning, Macie Grizzle and Rheagan Maynard.
QUOTABLE: “It’s definitely going to be a building year just because there’s a new coach and the girls have new systems, defense, offense to learn, but they all seem to be buying in to what I’m trying to teach them so I think we are all looking forward to working together and being successful on the court,” Scarborough said. “Our varsity is very young, which can be a little of a disadvantage. However, it also means we have much room to grow and will have most be returners for next year’s season. The girls are also just athletes so they are very versatile, and I am confident I could put them anywhere on the court and they could get the job done.”
SWEENY
COACH: Loure Dews (third year)
LAST YEAR’S RECORDS:
District 24-3A 10-0, 29-11 overall
RETURNING LETTERMEN:
Mekayla Gurley, senior; Kelly Vargas, senior; Mallory Weaver, senior; Cristi Johnson, senior; Heaven Fields, senior
STRENGTHS: After a run at the quarterfinal round, Sweeny returns some viable parts, including Gurley and Vargas who were the defensive player of the year in district and the setter of the year last season.
NOTABLE: Sweeny is on a six-year run of playoff appearances.
QUOTABLE: “This year our team is focusing on defense first.
We are trying to become excellent at practice so competitions will validate our hard work and focus.
Our district will be competitive this year and we will have to fight to continue on the winning path we have traveled for the last couple of years.”
