Mustangs are headed to state 7-on-7 tourney in College Station

June 17, 2014

Sweetwater will exper-ience a “first” next month when the Mustangs play at the state 7-on-7 tournament, which is scheduled for July 10-11 at Texas A&M University in College Station.
The Mustangs went to Stephenville this past weekend to participate in a state 7-on-7 qualifying tournament on the Tarleton State University cam-pus, and won their bracket and semifinals game to advance for the first time to the state tourney.
In bracket play, Sweet-water beat Godley 42-22, Grandview 35-26 and Eastland 37-29 to make the semifinals, where it defeated Tolar 40-26.
Then, instead of playing a championship game against Gatesville because both had already qualified for state by winning their semifinals, the teams decided to flip a coin and by winning the coin flip, the Mustangs were declared the tournament champions.
As a result of qualifying for the state tournament, Sweetwater has decided not to participate this weekend in a qualifying tournament at Abilene Christian University.
Sweetwater has since the first week in June been playing in a 7-on-7 league on a weekly basis at Abilene’s Action Zone along with Abilene High, Abilene Cooper, Midland Christian, Brownwood and Wylie. Action will continue through the end of June. The varsity plays on Tuesday nights and Sweetwater’s JV plays on Thursday nights.
All teams that finish in the top two of their state qualifying tournaments qualify for the state tournament. Sweetwater is in the Division II tournament; the Division I tournament is July 11-12.
Sweetwater will be in a four-team pool at College Station and will play three games on July 10. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the championship round on July 11, while the remaining two teams from each pool advance to the consolation bracket, also on July 11. All teams will play at least one game that morning, with the consolation final at approximately 3 p.m. and the state championship game at about 4 p.m. on July 11. More details will be announced at a later date.

Team members are Michael Lawrence, Deshaun Williams, Colby Greenwood, Kaegan Jeffrey, Isaiah McGee, Kiante McCoy, Denzell Moore, Lowell Williams, Hunter Mobley, Max Gomez, Jacoby Hunt, Bray Amos, Michael Green.

I thought, out of courtesy, teams are asked to go ahead and play out tournaments they have committed too?

If there are teams on the waiting list who have not qualified its more of a courtesy for a qualified team to back out

No, your right Matthew. I didn't think about that one.
