When there's no joy....no love....then emptiness creeps in. Then, there's others that simply lose contact with reality....not in their right mind. Sometimes the death of a loved one can cause depression and feelings of emptiness. For others it may be feelings of despair, drug-induced effects, or simply stress. Just about all these causal effects can be avoided and/or treated. It's just part of the "human condition" that's been around for centuries, but in today's world is so greatly magnified.

"You are less likely to die a violent death today than at any other time in human history. Just a couple of centuries ago, violence was pervasive. Slavery was widespread, wife and child beating were acceptable practices, heretics and witches were burned at the stake, pogroms and race riots were common, and warfare was nearly constant. Public hangings, bearbaiting, and even cat burning were popular forms of entertainment."

It is an interesting discussion. No doubt that the link by FF is correct. It is a far less violent and safer world than ever before.

I think what we are seeing is that information is so instant now and there are so many ways to obtain information that it seems like it's happening so much. And you also have to remember that we have twice as many people living in this country than just 50 years ago. So the raw numbers seem like more violent crime, but as a percentage of the population, it's generally down.

My world is cluttered with Right Wing Christians who do nothing but sit around and regale everyone about how awesome the world "USE" to be before the liberals took over. I'm not a liberal on most things but it irritates me to no end to hear people talk about how much better things were in the world in the past. Of course there are always certain things that could have been better in the past but there are also a equal number of things that were far worse..........

I don't understand what the link is for and how that relates to your comment...

It does not relate to my comment, just to the reference of right wing Christians.

The link suggests just the opposite in regards to violence. Notice the dates up to the 60's and then thereafter.
