Come watch it then 44, starting tomorrow in LaGrange (8PM), then in Corpus Saturday (3PM). Ykm only 4th place team, still alive in any classification.

I hear La Vernia is tough.

Good luck Yoakum.

Seems strange that the 1st game is in LG on school night at 8PM. ??? Long drive home for the Pirate team. What about Victoria being a neutral field? I guess Goliad doesn't have much of a baseball field.

La Grange has a great facility, but I agree...it's a long way to go on a school night. Pirate faithful will be there cheering on our Pirates!

Sounds to me like the coaches could not agree on fields and location , so they wenrt with a home and home pick.Just guessing.

Victoria was booked, and there was no coin flip. Both coaches agreed with arrangements. Both fields are in great shape. I assume Whatburger is? I know LaGrange's is in awesome shape, and they are great host's. Yoakum wanted to play at a place like Whatburger Field and appears it came about. Yes, closer to Sinton, but--worth it for them to play at a venue like this.

Whataburger Field is in great shape. I go there all the time and it is always in shape. It has been named minor league venue of the year (nationwide) several times. The Yoakum and Sinton fans should really enjoy it. Concessions are very pricey.

Noguerra has a decent fastball and very effective breaking pitches.

Here is an article from The Monitor on Hidalgo coach.

HIDALGO — Karlos Carrasco knows better than just about anyone what’s expected, and demanded, out of the Hidalgo baseball program. A four-year varsity player from 1999-2003 and an assistant coach from 2007-12 with the Pirates, he’s seen it all first hand. Now in his second year as the head coach, he can sum it up in two crisp sentences.

“They’ve expected you to win,” Carrasco said. “They expect those things here.”

Carrasco has done just that during the past two seasons, compiling 26 victories in 2013 (with a fourth-round playoff trip) and 22 victories thus far in 2014 (with a fourth-round playoff trip). His Pirates, the last Rio Grande Valley baseball team standing yet again, face La Vernia in a best-of-3 Class 3A regional semifinals series starting at 7:30 tonight at Cabaniss Field in Corpus Christi. Getting to this point last year, with a senior-laden team, wasn’t much of a shock. Getting to this point this year, was.

The Pirates only have two players (Oscar Noguera, Daniel Perez) on the squad this year that played significantly last season. They are young. They are inexperienced. They still won the outright District 32-3A title.

Carrasco’s players credit his honesty with them for helping them get here. When something goes wrong, he explains why it went wrong and what needs to be done to fix it. He doesn’t yell, he doesn’t freak out. He didn’t change anything just from 2013 to 2014.

“He approached the guys the same way he did last year,” assistant coach Ramon Soto said. “He puts (in) a lot of time to these kids. That’s the good part of him being so successful.”

It helped that Carrasco was, not too long ago, in his players’ shoes.

He was a standout for the Pirates when he attended Hidalgo. He grew up in the same town, the same streets, the same neighborhoods as the kids that he wound up coaching. Being around since 2007 as an assistant, he’s seen many of these kids come up through the little leagues and summer leagues. He knows them, and they know him.

Most importantly, he gets the area and the types of children it produces.

“I guess, since I’m from here, I’m more familiar with what kids are thinking, what’s going through their minds,” Carrasco said. “Money-wise, here, it’s a little tight, they don’t have a lot of money. I know where the kids are coming from, with the border being so close to us and with very poor places here across the city and in Las Milpas. It’s just something, that here, it’s normal. But for other people, from the outside, see that kind of in shock.”

Perhaps, that gave Carrasco the mentality and style that he’s developed. Unlike other coaches, who reward older players with ample playing time simply because they have put their time in with the program, Carrasco puts his best nine out on the field.

He doesn’t worry about the backlash or added pressure that it could bring. He wants to win, and he knows he needs to win.

“I’ve always been like that and I’m always going to be like that,” Carrasco said. “This is not a senior ballclub, this is not a junior ballclub. This is the Pirates and the Pirates are from grades nine to 12. I’m going to play the best from grades nine to 12, who are going to try out for baseball. I’ve always taken that mentality.”

Soto likens that thought process to something he saw in high school. He said that Carrasco has always been competitive, whether it was baseball or golf or anything. It’s carried itself over to adulthood, and it has paid off.

“He’s going all the time to baseball, he comes up with new ideas,” Soto explained. “He takes his time whenever he does something. He’s very determined in what he does.”

That determination was needed this season, with a young team that struggled its way through non-district and tournament play. Carrasco, as hard as it was, didn’t concern himself with wins and losses in February and March. He was getting his team ready for District 32-3A and the playoffs.

It’s a mindset that Carrasco didn’t have last season — and one he didn’t need to have. But a coach grows and adjusts to the talent around him. The Pirates, still playing baseball while every other Valley school prepares for 2015, have benefited.

“Since everybody’s young, everybody was doubting us that we wouldn’t make it to the first round,” freshman Dylan Dougherty said. “Now we’re going to the fourth round.”

Looking at the pictures from WBF that you took this weekend that's a good size crowd. No way Calallen can accommodate that. Robstown's Picker Field or Fairgrounds Field could handle a crowd of that magnitude.
