With DII SQT's right around the corner (May 17th), league play for schools should be getting underway here soon. Where is your school playing? Any early reports?

Last Saturday's tournaments. La Marque didn't win but we now have a quarterback (Jr. next year) with a rocket arm who should get teams out of those 8 and 9 man fronts we saw all last year. That should open lanes for our three headed monster at running back.

LA MARQUE – In Texas, it’s never too early to start getting ready for football season, which was apparent Saturday with La Marque and Texas City hosting area schools in the annual Greater Houston Area Coaches Association’s 7-on-7 tournament Saturday.

“You’re trying to get work done for the fall,” La Marque coach Mike Jackson said. “All of us are in the early phases, but it’s kind of the unofficial kickoff of the football season.”

While Jackson is a seasoned veteran and, as a member of the GHACA board, a founder of the 4-year-old event, Ball High offensive and defensive assistant coach Tristan Sanders was a first-time participant.

Entering his first season with the team after coaching semipro and youth select football teams in Galveston, Saturday’s festivities were a chance for Sanders to get an early glimpse at his new team after coaching many of the players in their younger years.
“They got better as the day went on,” Sanders said. “I’m proud of them, and I was happy to see them out there having fun.”
The two Galveston County schools were among five total host sites for this year’s event. Proceeds from ticket sales go toward scholarship funds.

“The big thing is raising money for the scholarships, and it’s going really well,” Jackson said.

Texas City hosted teams from Clear Creek, Dickinson, Friendswood, Pasadena Memorial, Pearland and Pearland Dawson. Joining host team La Marque were teams from Ball High, Brazosport, Columbia, Hitchcock, Santa Fe, South Houston and Stafford.

We start with a scrimmage with Sulphur Springs on Tuesday & Gilmer's Tournament (non-SQT) on Saturday the 17th...the juices are starting to flow...we will be lucky to make it to state this year...little talent with no speed...thank heaven the UIL moved us out of District of Doom into the Metroplex...at least we don't see Argyle anymore but we will see Carthage
