Kilby was leaving Sweeny this year, but the situation is not good. They'll be on 4 ADs in the past five years....there's one common theme here and that's the supt. He's known in coaching circles as a difficult guy to work for and it will likely limit the applicant pool significantly

Wow...thanks for the info. Sounds like some issues that need to be addressed. Best of luck to Sweeny as they move forward.

Sad situation. Sounds like that Columbus program and their prior Sup a few years back. Hope the folks in Sweeny demands the Sup to be the administrator and leave sports related issues to the AD? Right Matt, who in the world want's this headache to deal with.

Coach Zajicek was there for 4 years (2nd stint as head coach), then Coach Sawyer for 3 years, and this year was Coach Kilby.

Its not what you guys are making it out to be.

Sweeny's a good job.

Wasn't this the job that the Supt. had all but given to his son last year only to have the school board undo it?

If I also recall correctly his son was a pretty young guy but had already been made an assistant principal and had been the head basketball coach for several years.

I just remember there being lots of red flags surround the whole situation.

From The Facts....

Kilby resigns from Sweeny

By JOEL LUNA joel.luna@thefacts.com | Posted: Wednesday, April 2, 2014 2:00 am

SWEENY — Athletics director and head football coach Paul Kilby is leaving Sweeny High School, citing personal reasons.

In one season, Kilby guided the Bulldogs to a 3-2 District 24-3A record and an area round showing in the playoffs. The Bulldogs were 8-4 overall.

“I have decided that I must resign my position at athletic director of Sweeny ISD for personal reasons,” Kilby said in a statement released by Sweeny ISD. “I have discussed this matter with Superintendent Randy Miksch and given my circumstances, he has graciously agreed to release me from my contract.”

The statement did not elaborate on what those personal reasons were, and he could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Kilby said he will help the next athletics director transition into the job at Miksch’s request. His resignation was effective Monday.

Kilby’s vaunted slot-T offense last season accumulated more than 5,000 yards, including more than 4,500 yards on the ground. Senior Dorland Fields rushed for more than 2,000 yards and junior Anthany Simmons ran for more than 1,400.

The Bulldogs also broke the school’s single-season scoring mark with 519 points, surpassing the previous record of 479 points set in 1995. Sweeny lost to Hardin-Jefferson, 44-22, in the area round.

With the recent University Interscholastic League realignment, Sweeny will be classified as a Class 4A Division II Region III District 12 program starting in the fall. The Bulldogs will be joined in district by Bellville, Columbus, Brookshire Royal and Wharton.

Kilby came to Sweeny after two seasons as head football coach in Lockhart. A native of Ontario, Canada, his previous head-coaching experience was at Mathis.

Miksch said he will consider internal candidates for the position first before deciding whether to advertise for the job to outside candidates. The administration wants to fill the position as soon as possible.

Sweeny's a good job.

You can win at Sweeny! Its always been a good job! I am sure the Superintendent and school board want someone who can take them to the promise land in short order! Not a 5 year plan, but tomorrow! Good Luck, Sweeny!

Sounds like a **** show over in Sweeny. Similar to the mess that happened last year.

It's too bad. They have a lot of good athletes over there.

Stewart will get a huge promotion. He will now be the guy on the sideline holding up the huge playcards on the sideline. He told me the pic of Colonel Sanders is an all go's route.
