Legendary former coach W.T. Stapler, who in 1985 led Sweetwater to the only state championship in the school’s history, will be among the inductees into the Texas High School Hall of Fame in Waco on May 3.
Stapler was 51-16-2 in at Sweetwater from 1980-85, and in his final game the Mustangs, who were making only their second state finals appearance ever, beat defeated Tomball 17-7 to win the state title. The previous year, Sweetwater won its first district championship and earned its first playoff berth in 20 years.
Among Stapler’s assistant coaches during his time at Sweetwater was current Baylor head football coach Art Briles, who was here from 1980-83.
Stapler was 225-92-8 in a 28-year coaching career that also included stops at Conroe, Andrews, Brown-wood, Carlsbad (N.M.) and Saginaw Boswell.
He was enshrined in the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor in 1998.
