I found this 2005 Burnet Bulletin newspaper game recap of my son's 7th grade football team. It brought back some nice memories of that great little team. This team didn't just beat their opponents, they clobbered them! Pitched 8 shutouts that season. And three of the names mentioned in the article are still out there making a name for themselves in college football: Note the boy in the newpaper picture.

Notre Dame RB Cam McDaniel

Stephen F. Austin WR Aaron Thomas (who for some reason, was mentioned in the article as a lineman. He never played that. He was a WR/DB)

Texas WR Jaxon Shipley

Burnet folks still wonder what could've been had Bob Shipley stayed....As you know, Bob left to Coppell when Jaxon was an incoming freshman and took Cam with him. Bob later left for Brownwood and Cam finished high school at Coppell. We all know the rest of the story......oh well....like the old song says:

"And try not to think about
What might have been
'Cause that was then
And we have taken different roads
We can't go back again
There's no use giving in
And there's no way to know
What might have been".......:bigcry:......but I just can't help it!!......:bigcry::bigcry:.....:D

I don't remember them losing that year...maybe Greendawg can remember....his boys name is in this article too....I scratched my head on that one....I kept the scores and schedule on the fridge and I don't recall a loss....I think the paper was wrong....I just remember they won 8 straight and outscored their opponents 262 to 0 or something like that.....If they did lose, it must have been the very first game....I'll ask my son maybe he remembers.....I remember they had some great wins against Lake Travis in 7th and 8th grade...those same LT boys now have a big collection of state championship rings!! LOL......man, I really enjoyed those years....Jaxon's cousin Jack was the QB...He had a great arm...After Coach Shipley, Jaxon and Cam moved away, these boys were devastated....Jack quit football altogether his soph year...others did too. The boys who stuck with it recovered and still made the playoffs their junior and senior years....I wish I knew how to insert video on here....Believe it or not, one of the greatest catches I've ever seen was in 7th grade when Jaxon made a one handed grab while diving for a bomb...he snatched it in mid air completely parallel to the ground....To this day I don't know how such a young kid could make a play like that......Aaron Thomas became Burnet's acrobatic receiver in high school...Great hands...We had another kid (WR Brandon Jacque) who could've easily played at the next level...good kid who had a tough home life.....he was kicked off the team after his junior year....What a shame...

Well then that must explain it....like I said, I don't remember them losing or allowing a single point to be scored....The last game (per the article attached) was against an undefeated Marble Falls team. It was a nail biter at the end in that with only a minute to play Marble drove to the Burnet 5 yard line and threatened to ruin the defenses perfect scoreless season....Burnet held on 4 consecutive downs....I can still remember the boys jumping up and down celebrating a great accomplishment.......

Brandon Jacque is still the best baseball player I ever coached . That kid could have played at any D1 school in the state . Damn shame ....

My guess, it ends with Jaxon Shipley dragging a defender down.

That would have been an insane 3A team.

It was hearsay and maybe I miss understood how it was told to me. I thought Shipley and the admin were butting heads and everyone felt the best option was to split at that time. Looking at it from the perspective of Cam's post, I get the impression everyone was blindsided by the departure and based on who left, I can see why. What could have been...

Was a blindside for sure . Things kinda went down hill for a while but seems like Coach Jones has started to get things going in the right direction . When you lose that kind of talent off of any 3A team its gonna hurt !

I really don't know what happened. It did happen pretty quickly. Just one of those things. Burnet didn't just lose a good coach. They lost Jaxon and Cam as players. But those two boys weren't just players. They were leaders and very well liked by their teammates. Burnet lost more than that as well. Other kids bowed out. It didn't help that the new freshman coach was a complete idiot from California. Some folks wondered if Bob hired him on purpose as his parting gift to Burnet! LOL....I doubt that. But that coach was a mess. I remember one parent almost punching him out for telling the boys "they were a disgrace to the town of Burnet" after a hard fought loss...Remember Santos that day Greendawg? I thought he was gonna go to jail!!....
Bob had a way with kids. There's no way he would've let some kids quit. Like the QB, big Brodie, Brandon, the list goes on....he would've made a difference in some these kid's who were on the bubble IMO....
But yea, some say Burnet could've done some damage with that group intact....the 2010 defense only allowed 13 points/game. Throw in the explosive players we lost and who knows...plus, add the move-ins from Katy in 2011 (Belmarez twins). Damone and Damien were talents. Damien quit football. But I bet Bob would've convinced him not to..Damone is still doing his thing at Kentucky Christian U. (here he is below)....what a nice one-two punch he and Cam McDaniel would've made at the RB position!

I agree with you Greendawg, coach Jones is doing all the right things...Have you been in the field house lately? Looks great. Pics, slogans, etc. everywhere...He's doing all the little things too. Took our 8th grade group into the field house, gave them a speech followed by a varsity highlight video, and requested their on the field presence at a varsity game...the highlight video alone got my boy home all rejuvenated after a tough season...I think we got us a good one!:2thumbsup
