A couple of weeks ago we also had a guy commit suicide in a standoff with the police. Not sure what is going on but over all Sweeny is still Sweeny. We will be alright.

SWEENY — Police are looking for the man who made off with an undisclosed amount of money Friday afternoon after robbing Prosperity Bank.

Witnesses said the robber was a white man in his mid-30s, 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-7 tall, weighing 150 to 160 pounds, with balding brown hair and wearing a dark blue hoodie, Sweeny Police Sgt. Chris Beck said.

The man rushed into the bank in the 200 block of North McKinney Street about 1 p.m. Friday, approached a bank teller, showed a silver revolver and demanded money verbally, Beck said. No one was injured during the robbery, and the entire event lasted only a couple of minutes, Beck said.

“There were two bank tellers and only one customer in the bank at the time of the robbery,” he said. “The teller complied and handed over the money.”

Calls from the bank’s panic button and witness phone calls alerted police a few minutes after the robber left the bank. It is believed he stole a bank customer’s car to get away, then ditched it two blocks north at the McKinney Manor Apartments, Beck said.

The stolen vehicle was recovered at the apartment complex about 1:15 p.m. Friday.

After ditching that car, the man fled in a green car heading north on FM 1459, Beck said. No other vehicles have been reported stolen, so police believe it was the culprit’s car.

It is unclear if anyone left with the man as he fled.

“We are working with other local law enforcement agencies and the FBI to track down the suspect,” Beck said.
