I thought it might be interesting to compare the enrollment figures for all of the teams left in the playoffs. At first glance it appears to me that the new system of establishing a Div I & II cutoffs will at least be a little more fair. I know they have no control over it but it just does not seem fair that a school with 447 students could end up playing a school with 975.

3A Div. I Bracket

Stephenville (996) vs Lubbock-Cooper (1,144)
Tyler Chapel Hill (972) vs Kilgore (1,026)
West Orange-Stark (594) vs Carthage (723)
Gonzales (700) vs La Grange (611)

3A Div. II Bracket

Graham (690) vs Shallowater (437)
Gladewater (545) vs Argyle (698)
Fairfield (480) vs Rockdale (447)
Sinton (649) vs La Vernia (975)

What's crazy is you have La Vernia with an enrollment of 975 in the "small school" division and they have a higher enrollment than 5 of the 8 teams left in "big school" division.

Remember, the enrollment figures for this past alignment were from 3 years ago.

Really?? I thought the enrollment numbers for last realignment were from the 2011 snapshot day. Am I confused, as usual?

October of 2011...changed the alignments for 2012-2013 and 2013-2014...thus the snapshot in October of 2013 changes alignments for the next two years...three school years, I should have said.

That is what the new divisions are supposed to correct. They way it works right now are just going by the luck of the draw.

Yes. It doesn't seem fair. La Vernia would have been happy to play in D1. Fact is that school size has had little to do with the quality of the teams in 3A this year and in most years. one could argue that the path in D2 is tougher in any given year.

We were D2 in 2006 & D1 in 2007 - same district, same alignment.

We are expanding football travel budgets (both school and personal) in exchange for increased fairness. Hope it's worth it. For many folks who are struggling, this just means they'll have to skip some ball games on the road that they used to attend.

In our area we will travel less with the new alignment. No more navasota, madisonville 1hr 45 min drive, and Taylor traveled 2 hrs for dist. Now we might be with towns that are 13 miles up to 60 miles

You consider 1:45 a long drive? You East Texas people!

East Texas?

Everything west of Abilene is East Texas to a West Texan. Just like everything west of I-35 doesn't exist to everyone living east of the interstate.

La Vernia has tripled in size in 20 years. I remember when we made the jump to 3A. We had our share of games against larger schools. Always hated that we had to play big schools like Gonzales and Cuero. LOL. Here we are. Fat cats of 4A next year. Could be 5A real soon.
