SWEETWATER — Neither bitter cold nor drizzle nor icy roads nor Shallowater could keep Graham’s offense from swiftly scoring touchdowns Monday night.

The third-ranked Steers delivered another quick-strike touchdown spree in the first half at the Mustang Bowl, scoring on five of their first six possessions.

Dillon Gonzales found the end zone three in the game’s first 17 minutes as Graham handed the Mustangs a 45-14 loss in a lopsided battle of unbeatens in the Region I-3A Division II finals.

Graham (14-0) advanced to the state semifinals for the second straight year and will face No. 1 Argyle at 6 p.m. Saturday at Justin Northwest. The Eagles polished off Gladewater on Monday, 42-8.

While a winter storm had pushed this game back three days, Graham’s timing didn’t look disrupted as it moved the ball effortlessly in building a 35-7 halftime lead.

The Steers scored twice before Shallowater even had an offensive snap as Ben Davis threw a 9-yard touchdown to Hunter Baca on Graham’s first possession. Blake Bahl recovered the ensuing pooch kick, and then Gonzales did all the work on a 23-yard touchdown catch.

“We were just ready tonight. The whole weekend, you don’t do anything, you’re stuck in the house,” said Gonzales, who rushed for 168 yards and caught seven passes for another 80. “Even though it’s Monday, we don’t care. We’ll play you Tuesday, Wednesday, Sunday.”

Graham widened its lead to 21-0 on Gonzales’ nifty 38-yard touchdown on a nice cutback late in the first before the Mustangs finally woke up.

Cameron Knight caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Wes McCutcheon, but three minutes later Gonzales answered with a 2-yard run.

“To get in a hole that quick puts you in a bind, and you can’t play catch-up against those guys,” Shallowater coach Kyle Maxfield said. “When we made it 21-7, we felt like we got a little momentum, but they strike so fast on offense. We have to grind it out to earn every yard we got, and they just suck it out right from you.”

Bryce Reeves caught a 5-yard touchdown pass in the last minute of the second quarter to end the first-half assault. The Steers have outscored their last two opponents 77-7 before the bands played.

Shallowater tailback Jarek Black rushed for 158 yards, but was kept out of the end zone for the first time this season. The senior, who eclipsed the 7,000-yard career yard mark against the Steers, was stuffed three times in a short-yardage situation in the third quarter.

Graham coach Kenny Davidson called Black a great player, but said he used the Division I workhorse as a way to motivate Gonzales, who has now scored 35 touchdowns in 2013.

“I tried to lift up Dillon, by saying, ‘Who’s the best back on this field?’” Davidson said. “And I think he made a statement tonight.

“We came out again in the first half and played a really good half. We came out ready to play. It’s a testament to our coaching staff having the kids ready and to this team.”

Shallowater pulled with 35-14 in the third quarter on Cody Berryman’s 19-yard catch, but Graham answered with Fidel Herrera’s field goal.

The Mustangs did put plenty of pressure on Davis, who was sacked six times in the first half. But the senior quarterback still made plays, totaling 239 passing yards and three scores in the first half.

Davis then showed off his running skills in the fourth quarter, busting loose down the sideline for a 92-yard gain. Spur Hearne scored from 1 yard out on the next play to seal the victory.

“Holding them to 14 points, that’s a good game,” said Reeves, who added a late interception. “We’ll be ready to play (Argyle). It’ll be a fun game.”

Congrats to Shallowater on a great season. Very classy program with some great athletes. #35 was a very solid running back. He was able to break a few runs but Grahams D was able to keep him out of the end zone. Also give credit to #11. In the end Graham was just a better team!

High-octane Steers too much for Shallowater in 45-14 loss in regional finals

SWEETWATER — For 13 games, Shallowater’s grind-it-out style of offense has worked to perfection.

But when the Mustangs came up against a quick-strike, explosive, athletic offense that could match them blow for blow, the grind-it-out method wasn’t enough.

No. 3 Graham scored two touchdowns before the Shallowater offense ever hit the field, and the Mustangs didn’t have enough to rally as the Steers ran away for a 45-14 victory Monday night in a Class 3A Division II regional final at the Mustang Bowl.

“There wasn’t any concern we were going to come out and play hard,” head coach Kyle Maxfield said. “But us not being (down) like that this year ... sometimes there are days that it just doesn’t go your way and you’ve got to keep fighting.

“We’re a grind-it-out, grind-it-out (team), and they then turn around and bust a big play on you. They’re just so explosive.”

The Steers (14-0) advance to the state semifinals where they will face Argyle at a time, date and site to be determined.

Shallowater, meanwhile, watches one of its most successful seasons in school history come to an end. The Mustangs (13-1) set a new school record for wins and reached the regional finals for the first time since doing it in consecutive years in 2002 and 2003.

“Our ultimate goal was to get to (AT&T Stadium) and play for it all,” Maxfield said, “but they made school history, first time ever to have 13 wins. Their legacy will last forever in Shallowater, and they built for the future.”

To get one step further, however, the Mustangs needed to find a way to slow down the Steers offense, but never had a chance to do so.

Graham totaled 514 yards of total offense and quarterback Ben Davis was an efficient 22 of 31 passing for 252 yards and three touchdowns..

The Steers wasted no time getting going, scoring on their opening drive when Davis hit Hunter Baca for an 8-yard touchdown pass less than three minutes into the game.

The Steers then recovered an onside kick and converted that into points when Dillon Gonzales, who rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns, caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Davis to make it 14-0 with 7:19 still left in the first quarter.

“Against a team like Graham, you can’t give them any turnovers,” Maxfield said. “We did that a little bit tonight. To get in a whole that quick puts you in a bind and you can’t play catch-up against those guys.”

It wasn’t until the Steers led 21-0 after a 38-yard Gonzales run that the Mustangs finally got going offensively.

Jarek Black, who came into the game 120 yards to break into the list of top 25 career high school rushers in the state of Texas, finished with 170 to end his stellar career with 7,078 yards. But the Steers did a good job keeping him out of the end zone, and he had just two carries on the night of more than 25 yards.

“We just had to fill our gaps,” Graham coach Kenny Davidson said. “Everybody did their job. (Black) is such a good back that he can find a hole (anywhere). At the same time the quarterback can pull it, but I think our kids were prepared. They watched a lot of film this week and the defense came to play.”

Shallowater cut the Graham lead to 21-7 on a 10-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Knight. But the Steers finished the half with a flurry as Gonzales scored on a 2-yard run with seven minutes left, and Bryce Reeves added a 5-yard touchdown catch from Davis with 56 seconds left until halftime, giving the Steers a 35-7 halftime lead.

The Mustangs tried to make a game of it in the second half, scoring on their opening drive of the second half when Wes McCutcheon hit Cody Berryman for a 19-yard touchdown pass to cut the Steers lead to 35-14.

From there, however, the next to Shallowater possessions ended in turnovers on downs and another on a game-sealing interception by Reeves.

Graham, meanwhile, added a Fidel Herrea 28-yard field goal, then put the game away when Spur Hearne scored from a yard out after Davis had gotten loose for a 91-yard run.

“I was really proud of our kids because we hadn’t been down like that all year at halftime,” Maxfield said. “They came out and fought for two more quarters. I’m proud of their effort.”

Plain and simple after last night. Shallowater was a very good team. Black is a heck of a running back. At the same time, Graham is the real deal. Very solid all the way around. I know Argyle is very good, but I do think Graham can stay on the field with them for 4 quarters
